I need the help of my food gurus.....
so as many of you have aready read I got a new pup, he's a husky crossed and i named him Aiden. and he is remarkably underweight. so i am tring to fatten him up given him a high quality food (Evo RM, figured the high protein would also be good for his malnourished bones and went with RM in case my one thats sensitive to chicken gets in to it) and he's barely eating it (i know hes new but hes eating a total of less than 1/2 cup a day. and his poops are liquidy, I mean liquidy poor boy so i was wondering, since he was probably on gross grocery store crap with all its stool hardeners before and its sprayed on fat (yuck) if i should give him 1/2 crap and half evo and try to gradually ease him to to the evo? or is there something i can give him to help him with the evo (digestion, ill be putting some canola oil on it to make it tastier)? please help me food gurus (i swear i think of all of you whenever my dogs and cats are eating their wholesome and delicious food. they would not have been eating as well as they do if it weren't for you guys) thanks in advance

BMD taught me (but this is my own interpretation in case I muck it up ) that with new rescues, you feed crap for a bit (because that's most likely what they were eating before) till they're stable and then gradually switch them over to a new food after that.

(ewwwe..... thats gonna feel weird) hopefully he'll eat it.it seems like he hasnt been eating much for a very long time .... i mean under all that fur he has a boney disgusting body, it makes me sooo sad i hope its nothing more than him being stressed from the pound and homeless for awhile. i hope the vet doesnt find any underlying health concerns

Hi Michelle,
Have you thought about trying raw? Our puppy had all kinds of problems digesting kibble (all "premium" kibble, not the supermarket crap) and he had loose stools all the time. We switched him to raw one day and it's been smooth sailing ever since The added bonus is that it's WAYYY better than any kibble out there....crappy or premium. It doesn't get any healthier than raw! I know most dogs have an easier time digesting raw because it doesn't have all those artificial additives and the digestive enzymes are still present, which are otherwise killed during the heating process of making kibble. Just a suggestion...

Is there any way you can find out what he was being fed before you got him? Then switch him slowly to a better brand.
Also, it's been my experience that huskies have sensitive digestive systems and soft poops when they are young. The husky I have now (Logan 22 months) is doing great on Innova (the regular not the EVO). I add a tablespoon of organic yogurt to his supper every night. Whatever food you decide on make sure you do the switch very gradually so it's easy on his system. I would also hold off on any additions to his meals (other than yogurt) until he is getting good poops. Dog cookies would be okay for his treats though. Good luck. |

First, start him on digestive enzymes and a vitamin/mineral supplement. The enzymes will settle down his gut and help him to absorb food. The supplements will help to rebuild his systems and help him to utilize the better quality food you're going to feed him. You probably know this, but the higher quality dog foods require that you feed your dog smaller volumes--read & compare--the good stuff contains more calories per cup.
Get samples of various foods and find the high quality food he likes best. Buy small amounts (like 10 lb bags) for a while--his taste in food may change. My experience with Nutrapet's California Naturals is that it really perked my puppy up, it makes firm stools, and seems to be nutritionally good. (www.nutrapet.com) Supplement his food with other stuff. Dry low fat milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, canned fish, canola oil, and cooked veggies (cooked greens are good for people and doggies) & lean poultry will all help. I'd avoid animal fats, hydrogenated fats, anything with sugar. |

Angie's man beat me to it!! I was going to suggest supplementing his food with digestive enzymes and probiotics (get them at the pharmacy, it's cheaper than at pet-food stores for the same thing!)

thanks for the suggestions......ill look in to the digestive enzymes and probiotics for sure. Rainbow I also have a husky (named logan too) and hes on regular innova and he does great as well. (wow the simularities). there is no way of finding out what he ate before because he was a stray, and he was only in the pound for 9 days so that wouldnt make too much of difference.... however i did just buy some science diet sensitive tummy and had a little bit of Evo RM in it ( i couldnt give him a whole meal of crap, i just couldnt do it) and he ate it all up...... so ill try with a mixture of those two until his poop firms up and then ill start switching him to innova, im not sure if ill go evo or regular. i was facinated by raw but i dont think i can do it

oh another question...... do i feed towards the current weight, the recommended weight, or just let him eat till he's full at meal times? (yes i know that the recommended amount on the bag is too much, but im trying to find out how to plump him up.... (safely)

Food gurus
I usually feed my foster dogs of unknown backgrounds a Nutro food. I feel it is not too bad in the way of dog foods and they all eat it. I did have one that wouldn't eat anything so I opened up some fish oil capsules and poured them all over his food. He had trouble resisting but the smell on my hands was just disgusting.

horray, Aiden ate 2 cups of food for dinner tonight and 2 cups at breakfast, and hes had more formed poops hes been having a mix of 1/2 Evo and 1/2 science diet. Im going to keep this mix until he gets nice firm poops and then i'll start switching him completely to Evo. hopefully he'll start bulking up soon (doing a happy dance)
