Some raw chicken or other meat will hold them over temporarily, but will need a proper diet in the long run.

Approximately how old? If they are around 3 months they can eat adult food. For a cats 5 months is nearly grown, at 6 months they should be neutered/spayed.
The best food for cats is canned, NOT dry and NOT Friskies or Iams. Wellness, Eagle pack Holistic are decent, thosevare the two I feed, but I know there are others. I'm sure the cat nutrition experts will be along soon to tell you more

A good site for you to read is:

http://www.catinfo.org/

It gives some very good information on the proper nutrition for a cat. IF you can afford to then yes, please feed the best canned grain free foods you can. Wellness, Nature's Variety, Eagle Pack, etc. If you are on a budget as many of us are these days then the pate style cans of Fancy Feast and Friskies are not bad. Not by any means as good as the more costly foods but they will get the job done and are much better than feeding dry.
