Fish injured from fall.
My goldfish Silk is 8 years old, and several days ago he jumped out of his tank and fell several feet. He had stopped moving by the time we found him and we were sure he was dead. He was alive though and seemed fine when he was back in the water (I now keep his tank covered!), but the next day his tail started to turn red. After a couple of more days, his tail is now completely red, and I'm not sure if he is swimming as well as he had been. Does anyone know what to do for him? Thanks.

Yes, thank you. But I assumed that! However, the bruise and his swimming has gotten worse every day this week. And the question still remains as to what I need to do for him. I would really appreciate any help!

I guess that really what I am worried about is internal bleeding, and why it keeps getting worse.

Best of luck to you and your fish that he makes a fast recovery. Hope fully its just a bruise, but i will continue looking over the internet and through my moms vet books. But sooo far, theres not much in the books on fish

There's a web site called koivet. Go to koivet.com and they have a goldfish forum there. Excellent site to get help.

There's another goldfish site you could go to for help as well. The goldfish and aquarium board. Another very good site for fish help. thegab.org

It could be bruising or irritation from falling on the floor or it could be an infection from the stress and injury of falling on the floor.
The main thing to do would be watch your water quality very closely (be sure to keep nitrates at least below 40 as a general rule and even moreso for injured fish, there should be no ammonia or nitrite). If he has a strong immune system he should be able to recover, but at a fairly old age after such a stressful event he may not, you can't know for sure. There are no exact disease that fit that description so I could not recommend a medication and I personally think it would be best not to medicate unless you have something in mind (medications themselves tend to be stressful). There could be internal injuries as you mentioned and in that case I don't think there's anything you can do. Last edited by MyBirdIsEvil; July 22nd, 2008 at 09:47 PM. |

if it were me id be doing 50% WC's daily. i suspect what made him jump in the first place was poor water quality and his search for cleaner water. sorry.... hop on those WC's!!!! is the tank filtered?? how large is it? any other fish in there??
