advice needed

Hi there from North of 47..I need piece of advice from all cats lovers.

I inherited 2 years ago this wonderful cat Sully. he's 5 years old, quite a big cat ( 20lb or so) but very shy and cute. 2 weeks ago while we both sleeping, out of the blue, he viciously attacked me and bit my hand.He was very aggressive , growling and hissing for about 4 hours; after that everything went back to normal. My hand was a mess for couple of days. I thought he probably had a nightmare because it was so "out of his character". Last night he did it again, under same conditions ...both were sound asleep. This time the aggression lasted only couple of minutes but the marks of its teeth are again on my hand. If the first time, I didnt know how to react and I totally ignored him until he behaved "normal" again..the second time I yelled and scolded him.

I wonder if anybody experience anything like this ( probably, I hope) and if you guys have any advice.

I think you should bring him to the vet , I know that some animals can get aggressive when they come out of a seizure .... not saying that's it , but I would start with having him checked out by your vet.
