Little dog>inhaling previous dog's "scents" left on grass! Help?
Any suggestions for learning techniques > retraining a little rescued dog, who has a bit of "OCD". When walking (not!) .... she LOVES inhaling the "packages" left from previous dog's......absolutely cannot get away from their "interesting" scents they have left on the grass, fire hydrants etc.! So..... it is not walking her......because she feels the need to stop every inch to "INHALE", deeply, very deeply.....and wishes to remain their inhaling and inhaling....deep breaths......all of the interesting scents left by dogs who urinated, "etc." and left some tantalizing messages to her..... Any comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Unfortunately, that's what dogs do. They're very 'nose' oriented--they use their noses more than we use our eyes to pick up signals about their environment. They 'read' scents like we would a medical report or a personal profile on a dating site...only they likely get more accurate information from their noses than we do from the internet!
About the only way to stop it is to train her to walk at heel all or part of the way, which is okay to a point, but she'll be much happier if you take a few breaks along the way to let her just be a dog and do some sniffing.

You could try using a head halter, so when you pull on the leash to move you are pulling her nose from the scent instead of pulling by the neck where she can just hunker down and try to resist being moved.

We have 4 little dogs and they all do it. I pull them away from the poop but Pee-Mail? Let then sniff....This rescue dog is learning how to be a dog and a loved one at that. Remember it was probably used for breeding and had no contact with the outside world. PICURES are rquired here....

you can teach them "leave it".....after a few good "sniffs" I tell Brina "leave it" and she will walk away, but its just a dog being a dog....reading their "newspaper"
