Murphy going for surgery

My parents doggie is going for surgery on tuesday.

She has a fatty lump on her back, and possible breast cancer - the tumor spans the length of three nipples, and is growing pretty quickly... so hopefully the surgery stops it! They are also performing the spay operation at the same time.

She's a little dachsund cocker spaniel cross, and is about 11 years old. The vet said she is healthy otherwise, has a good heart and lungs.

I really hope she gets through the surgery ok.....

has anyone else had to deal with breast cancer in their dog?
I realize that spaying her could have helped prevent the cancer....

is this too much surgery at once?

i'm worried!

Any surgrery is risky and as our pets get older it is more risky. Good luck and we will be keeping you in our thoughts let us know she does.

I've never had a doggy with mammary cancer before, but being that she's an old gal, I'd opt for a full blood work up before the surgery if she hasn't had one recently. Anaesthetic is the riskiest part and it's hard on the kidneys.

Good luck. I hope all goes well.

Please keep us posted on Murphy's condition. My Dachshunds did not have mammary cancer (neutered boys) but they each underwent surgery that lasted 6 and 7 hours respectively. Dachshunds are tough in that no way are they going anywhere without a fight so hopefully the Dachshund temperament is dominant. Age is of course an issue but since the surgeon believes there is hope, then there is hope. My guys were both very high risk, but there was a chance - without surgery, no chance, so we went for it. The hardest part for you will be the wait during surgery.

So, murphy had her surgery today. Everything went swimmingly. I called my mom to see how she was doing and the vet said she was already barking at everyone in her little pen.

The mammory tumor was pretty big and deep, and they are sending it for analysis just to see what's what.

So, there's the initial update. We'll see how she is when she gets home tomorrow!

awe... murphy has a big cone on an has to wear a tshirt!

she is doing well minus the cone , sometimes it gets stuck on the carpet and stuff. having legs that are only like, 6 inches long doesn't help!
