Looking for a Vet in Saskatoon.

Hey guys! I recently moved from Kelowna, BC to Saskatoon, SK. I am looking for a reputable vet for my dog. Can anyone recommend one? I live on the West side, so it would be best to get one over here in case of emergencies, although I hear all after hours emergencies go to the college?

Any help would be appreciated! If you want to caution me against a vet please PM, as this would be much appreciated as well.

I would have to reference the name of the vet that I like the most there but I can say I've never had a bad experience there.

Not sure if you need a vet for a dog or cat (or both) but I would also recommend The Cat Hospital of Saskatoon for cats. It is on the east side but I took my cats there to be fixed just cuz I felt I wanted it to be a peaceful experience (no barking dogs) and feel that obviously if a vet only sees cats they must have a passion for them.

If I can find the name of the vet I'd recommend at the All West Clinic I'll post it later when I get home. I have seen a few different ones there, though, and can't say anything bad about any of them.

Thanks for your response Dracko!! In fact, it was All West that I drove by yesterday that made me think I need to find a vet (before I need one!). That's funny. Oh, and it is just for my dog, I don't have any cats. Please do post the name if you can find it.

I know I have had to take a few pets to the college myself from here, and have always thought they were amazing there, If you have an emergency you know it would be a safe bet to go there and know you will get the best care possible, in sk, and mb, all vets have to refer to there for more advanced care, Good luck and welcome to the prairies!!

Can I use a vet at the college for my regular vet? Or do they only deal with emergencies?

My dog does need her yearly senior blood panel done in July, so I would like to locate a reputable vet.

Thanks for the link. Myka is doing very well! Thanks for asking rainbow! She is now 11 years old (as of Nov 14th), and her age is starting to show. Her eyes are starting to reflect kind of funny, so I'm wondering if her sight may be going, and yesterday was the first day I saw her bump into something as if she didn't see it. So that is a bit worrying. I know her hearing isn't as good as it used to be. Overall she is happy and healthy. I hope the same for your critters. =]

You can use the vet college for all your vetrinary needs including regular checkups, shots and other concerns. The only caveat is that you will likely see a different vet each time. Your animal(s) will be seen by a combination of residents and vetrinarians, depending on the reason for your visit.

I have had 2 dogs so far and both have received excellent care from the Small Animal Clinic at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. My first dog originally saw a local vet for her regular visits. That vet diagnosed her with cancer and told me that there was nothing that could be done for her and her life was essentially over. I refused to accept that and immediately too her to the vet college. They were able to provide a combination of surgery and radiation therapy and gave my dog another 2 years of relatively pain-free life. If I had listened to the local vet, whose knowlegde was obviously outdated, my dog would have died within a couple of months at most.

It is possible that Myka is developing cataracts. Depending on the specific situation, this can often be corrected in dogs using surgery that is done quite regularly. My first dog had cataract surgery when she was 5 years old and had fine vision for the rest of her life (11 years).

The Small Animal Clinic at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University is where I had this surgery done.

Hi milanboy, I took Myka to Dr Kim Ward at the Martensville Veterinarian just 12 minutes north of Saskatoon. After asking around a lot a very surprising majority of people said Dr Ward was their preferred vet in the area. Not having visited other vets in the area, but having dealt with many vets in my lifetime, Dr Ward is very impressive. A very good vet indeed! However, Myka very suddenly died in January of this year from a suspected brain/nasal tumor. I dealt with a couple emergency vets at the College vet, and even though they are good vets, I wouldn't want to use them for regular check ups.
