A Moment In The Life Of A Milan Cafe

Anatomy of a photo . . .

I like this one of a cafe scene in Milan . . . . let's call it "A Moment In The Life Of A Milan Cafe."

I could be irreverant and say this image was an accident but actually I took about a dozen images through two visits to this place near our hotel, sitting in the same outside seat and deliberately looking for . . . . . something in the window.

Mostly, I wanted to catch the barista on the left looking out towards the street.

However, when this lady stepped to the window with her cup, the barista on the left looking towards the street, the other waiter facing towards me, the pedestrian and oncoming traffic reflected in the window . . . even the people upstairs in the cafe . . . . . it all came together.

There are a lot of stories in that window.

But the woman stepping up, as many Italians take their coffee on their feet rather than sitting down, with a lost-in-thought expression, makes it work.

She's the "something."

That is a fantastic photo Rick. If I remember right you had said that you forgot your best camera and ended up making do with what you had. Well done!

A $350 Sony Cybershot pocket digital. . . . .

I didn't forget the Nikon D-80 . . . just didn't want to carry it around with a bunch of lenses. I travel light man!!!

I did take a Panasonic DMC FZ20 but I expected it to pooch any second on account of prior abuse and sure enough, it died about three days into the trip.

So it was pretty much Sony all the way!!!

Using a lower standard camera is actually a fun challenge anyway.

Another Sony Cybershot picture, inside the Duomo in Florence with a rainstorm howling outside, a visitor warms her hands on some candles

Fab shots Rick C

There's a lot going on in the first shot. Nicely done and nice of you to admit the truth...that it OFTEN takes many shots to get 1 good one.
This is so true of many photographers.
With some professional photographers in fact the ratio is 30-40:1

The second shot has great mood and EXCELLENT composition.

I hope other members will post some shots as well - all photography shots and levels are welcome!

A revival of a very old thread . . . . . you'll see "Milan Cafe," the picture above, in the current issue of Photo Life magazine as one of the winners in their "Reflections" competition.

And, I'll point out again, taken with a cheap Sony Cybershot as demonstration that it's not all about equipment (although that helps certainly).

The first picture is a truly stunning capture!! Absolutely brilliant! The reflections of all and the traffic caught as well as those inside looking out!! Fantastic.

Love the other one as well.
