Fear of Thunderstorms

My shihtzu is terrified of thunderstorms. She tries to dig out of the house, pants uncontrollable, runs around jumps up on counters and is generally out of control. My vet gave her sedatives, they work somewhat, but I am looking for some more information on helping her calm down.

My cats HATE thunderstorms. Especially my Sneaky, she follows me around as so as it is and during a storm she is seriously under foot. The only thing I can say is keep her close and love her up as best you can.
We don't normally let the cats sleep in our room because I can't sleep on/with the hair (allergy I believe) but when there's a storm they run back and forth in the hallway and bang on the door. We let them in then and they calm down and eventually fall asleep.
They're calling for bad storms here tonight, I can't wait!!
Give her some hugs and good luck, sorry I couldn't be more help.

Desensitization is the key

Get a cd or tape of a thunderstorm

Begin playing it on the lowest volume you have. Do some training and play games when it's on. Leave it on for 15 mins or so then turn it off.

Do this every week 3 or 4 times a week. Each week, gradually increase the volume BUT it's important to do training and make the time happy time.

When a real storm comes, do the same thing....get some training in ...do some general sit down stay and come commands. Give treats, praise and lots of attention BUT do NOT reward any cowaring or fearful behaviour.

Keep using the tape recording weekly until u get to the volume of a regular storm and it's not so bothersome to the dog.

PS I have a Cleo in my neighbourhood thats a S'Tzu as well

If she is panting wildly, she is under stress. Luba's idea might work, but I'm sure she will know the difference between the real thing and a tape. Get a dog who is quite relaxed durring thunderstorms over. If this dog relaxes, your dog might get the message, and stop being so scared.
