A wonderful rose bargain buy.

At our place we started off with roses, then I swapped to native plants to bring honeyeaters into the garden, and finally have swung to a 50/50 mix. I was delighted to be first to call when a chap advertised 10 standard Iceberg roses in the paper last week for just $100. ( $28.50 per rose plus postage is what the rose places are asking this year). I'll put them down both sides of our front path I think. They are only 4 year old roses, the guy doesn't like pruning them seeing they have masses of flowers. Doing a happy dance for sure.

What currency is 28.50 Goldfield?

I buy my roses from a rose breeder (usually in the fall) and they are between 10.00 and 13.00 (Canadian) per plant.

klm, is that bush or standard roses? The cost of a standard rose here from a rose business converts to $25.88 Canadian. I will be paying just $9.08 in your money. So cheap that the guy rang me back today to make sure I wanted them, as he'd had a lot of people ring about them.

For a Hybrid Tea. I do believe their shrub roses go for anywhere between 13 & 15.00 Canadian.

I will need to order an "S" rose come September. My "Senior Prom" did not survive the harsh winter.

Oh, that's bad luck, but at least you have a massive choice of roses starting with S. Hate losing roses myself seeing you have to replace them with younger, smaller roses.

Why is it bad luck Goldfields? Never heard that expression.

Is that true, klm? Everyone commiserates by saying "Oh, bad luck" or "that was bad luck" here. Certainly not a good thing to lose a rose. It's just a figure of speech.

but I've never heard of that figure of speech and have lost many roses over the years. Perhaps if I didn't lose any, I could have been a millionaire by now?

Yes, it can be hard to get roses to survive. It might be the cold there and the heat here that kills them. Don't make me start thinking about how much money's gone down the drain due to them, I don't want to know. I must get outside with my dogs because it's really clouding over now. I am trying to get hundreds of Alyssum plants planted along the border of my rose reds before it rains. I grow my own seedlings but think in terms of how many cat litter trays full of punnets will I need for a job, not just how many punnets. LOL. Back to work.

Well, I picked up the Iceberg roses and have just heeled them into a big vegie garden that was standing idle, their proper place isn't ready yet. Nice strong plants, see below. I have 20 roses, all sorts , in a bed around a big old tree stump and today finally put a brick edging around the bed , it looks a lot neater.

Good deal on your roses Goldfields. You sure seem to know a lot about them. I plant em, and hope for the best.

Dog Dancer and chico2, that's all I'm doing. If I need help or advice I turn to the garden forums I'm on, or to my sister, who grows the most beautiful roses. It was Barb bringing up big bunches of huge roses that got me interested, but I've only been growing for a short time myself. While my memory is usually appalling I find remembering roses as easy as remembering dog or horse pedigrees, or the animals themselves. Our roses here are probably at their best at the start of November, around Melbourne Cup time, in fact because I worked with racehorses in my younger days and Flemington racetrack during the Spring carnival is renowned for the roses there, I named my precious Silk(sheltie) Goldfields Silks n Roses for her show name. I was watching the Fashions on the Field(the judging of the beautiful outfits women wear to the Spring carnival) on Ladies Day, when the Oaks is run(for 3 year old fillies), and at the same time trying to work out names for my litter, so Silk's sister, Kizzy. got G's Fashion N Flair. LOL.
Hopefully, after my sister pruning the roses, I might get blooms worth showing to you this year.

They look very hardy and hope to see pictures come November around the Melbourne Cup!

klm, they are what are called standard roses, where the rose is budded onto a tall rootstock. They're more expensive than bush roses. Here they are just living temporarily in a big vegie bed. Seeing they could be there till next Winter I may plant flowers in that bed as well.
