Angry Nasty book

Has anyone read "Training Your Retriever" by James Lamb Free?

The "Spare The Rod" section is exactly the opposite of it's name. Here are some quotes from it:

"a good old fashioned thrashing won't hurt him a bit"

"Be sure you administer any corporal punnishment in private"

"Wallop your trainee with it, (a rolled up newspaper) hard, several times across the big muscle of the flank."

"Use the strap and use it intelligentley"

When on earth was this published??

I collect vintage dog care & training books, many of the old ones (pre-1950) suggest stuff like this. But that way of "training" has been frowned upon for decades.

I took a few ob courses with an old style trainer. Very nice lady. She even offered me a sort of job helping her with classes. But while she didn't hit any dogs - that I saw - her methods were archaic & not as effective as they could have been, And her own dogs were lacking in confidence & a bit hand shy...
She'd even titled dogs to the UD level, but I don't think her dogs were very happy or enthusiastic workers.

I'll do a search on that book on amazon.

Actually the book is only 13 years old. Published in 1990, it says. I got it at a book drop off for some people with a hyper Golden Retriever. I started reading it, and knew certainly I wouldn't give it to them. I can't honestly know why anyone would read it. And here is another example of the book: The author said that he once had a dog who was built like a jeep, and could absorb as much pounding as a jeep too!!The guy repeatedly pounded and whiped the dog until I assume the dog got too scared to do the wrong thing he had been doing.

And he also said that he had a very eager to please dog, but she needed to be hit with a newspaper because she was "bad"!

CRUELTY!!!!!

Oh...you're correct about the publishing date. My bad, I was just going by what one of the reviewers wrote.
Sheesh. It sounds awful!

and how many people out there are currently using such methods each and every day. i was once told by a pretty little woman that i needed to break my dogs spirit to have a good one, her dog would crawl on its belly when called by me even with a snack in hand and kind encouragement, yeah, she really broke its spirit till it was a wimpering little thing with absolutly no spirit or personality. only recently my dog ran after the ball in the park and being tired sat down with it when she got to it (her way of saying im hot and tired). i usually let her rest then call her (it is really hot at the mo). a 'friend' was with us at the time and he said " you need to give that dog a bloody flogging, look at her" you should see his rotwheiler it is terrified of everything even the dark. these people are sick and have extreme mental and ego problems and only want to contrl dogs for ego enhancement and to make them feel big, @#$&* loosers, ahhh they make me want to scream spare the rod, ha, give me that rod and i will show you how it should be used

Oh Melanie....thats terrible!!

Maybe this James Lamb Free was diseased because a dog chewed him up and it got infected!

Hmmm. I'd sure make him "Lamb Free" and dog free if I got a hold of him. Its too bad his last name wasn't "dog free!"

I hate these type of people.
