Cushing’s - no treatment?

Hi,

So I think I already know the answer to this which is: find a new vet, but wanted confirmation from you all.

So a few months ago my 11 year-old huskadore retriever was sort of diagnosed with cushings. The vet said she thinks that’s likely after a blood and urine test. I called to ask what was next and the vet emailed me a bunch of interesting articles on cushings. I called again about next steps and the vet said it was difficult to determine if cushings is what he’s got. These calls where all done through voicemails so it was a little unclear.

Last week my girlfriend took my dog in for his yearly rabies and she asked about the cushings the vet mentioned it could also be kidney failure. I called back and the receptionist checked his info and said there was nothing about kidney failure. The vet has yet to return my call.

Rio is old and full of fatty tumors, arthritis and a constant eye-infection (he’s currently on eye drops, tramadol and gabapentin). But I’ve never hesitated to pay for treatment or medicine so I’m confused on why the vet isn’t offering any course of action. This isn’t normal, right?

Apologies, this turned into more of a complaining post than I had intended.

It can be difficult to diagnose Cushings, so that much, at least, is true. Not sure why the vet isn't being more forthcoming. Rio might be an older gent, but we had a lab that was 15 when he died so Rio may still have some good years left if he can get treatment!

Can you make another appointment so you can at least talk to the vet in person?

Are you anywhere near a veterinary teaching hospital? We often use the one at the U of Mn when we have a tough case--it's a couple hours away, but they have a lot more experience with some of the more uncommon diseases than regular vets often do. If you don't get the info you need from your vet, maybe she'll give you a referral to a teaching hospital?

Good luck, and keep us posted, pls!

Thanks - I’m about an hour and a half from a teaching hospital. I’ll ask about that this week!
