If any trainer did that to your dog then that is definately NOT a good trainer.
Infact, that is not a trainer at all. I am shocked actually.

What breed is your dog, how old, how long has this been going on, where did you get your dog, how long have you had the dog and finally, can you identify any triggers that causes the dog to bite?

It's a sad fact that anyone can put out a shingle and call themself a dog trainer, a dog behaviourist, a dog nutritionist, a dog walker or any number of dog related things. There is no regulation or agency or regulatory body to ensure these people are what they claim and know what they are doing. Except for Veterinarians, which must be licensed in the province they practice in.

But, you obviously do need someone to help you and you are to be congratulated for realizing this. So what do you do to find that someone? I suggest you start by checking out this website: http://www.cappdt.ca/public/jpage/1/p/Home/content.do Check out their mandate, by-laws and code of ethics. When you look for trainers near you hopefully you will one who lists working with the problems you are having. Not all do. Then meet with the person as you still have to make sure your goals and theirs mesh and that you feel comfortable with them. If they teach a class somewhere perhaps you could go to watch before committing yourself. Good luck.

Wow, what a terrible experience that must have been, Jessica. That is definitely NOT normal. That is abuse, in my mind.

You may want to think about reporting the person/business to the Better Business Bureau. It may help someone else avoid hiring them, if the "trainer" indeed operates an actual business.

The info given by Longblades is great and I hope you find a more suitable trainer! Good for you for getting the help your dog needs.

Anyone who would have done that to my dog, would have gotten a kick to the nadds so fast, his great grandchildren would still be seeing stars.

Random...
So its some conflict that you started a thread about an anonymous trainer basically hanging your dog by its leash and collar because it acted aggressively towards him/her? and you were concerned and decided to come ask people with actual knowledge on training and proper pet management and said it was WRONG to do so?
I'm thinking that this so called trainer got wind of the thread.

Random - I missed this thread.

Something i share all the time - is that all dogs will benefit from obedience training. But make sure whoever you get is REFERRED by someone you trust. That's so so so so so so so so key.

Unfortunately, any bonehead with a noose can call themselves a dog trainer.
