Hello
Just thought I'd say hello as a new member!
We just picked our pup last night and we already have a problem. He's an adorable Cane Corso Mastiff (Brindle). He's will be 5 months old in 2 days. He has Cherry eye in both of them and we want to get that fixed immediately. I brought him home and put a Christmas bow on him and tied him to the railing at the front door. Called my wife via the cell and asked her to tell the kids that she thinks there's a raccoon at the front door!!!! This really made up for our loss in July of our 2 1/2 yr American Staff last summer. He died of seizures due to Epilepsy. The joy in our boys face really made it special. Thanks Bobsuruncle |

I think it's like when they have blood in their eyes ? If that's the case , you would need to take your pup to the vet.
Pictures are needed here |

Welcome to the board, Bobsuruncle!
Yep, we definitely need some pictures! Cherry eye--is that where the tear gland in the inside corner is everted? If so, I believe the only fix for it is surgical.

I'm trying
The pictures seem too big to upload.
I might have to reduce them somehow or try winzip??? Yes the cherry eye is the bulging of the (I think) tear duct. It becomes blocked due to infection or bacteria. In some breeds its genetic. Some dogs as pups can get it from simply digging in the yard or rubbing their face on a carpet. I'm presently searching in the Toronto/Mississauga area for a vet who has experience with this procedure. I'll try for those pics asap. Thanks again and I'm really pleased with this site. Very informative and caring people. Sincerely, Boburuncle |

Try hosting your pics through "tinypics", it is free and automatically resizes them for the forum.
As for the cherry eye, yes it is normally corrected through a surgical procedure, however, we have been seeing many at the grooming shop and their owners were advised to leave them alone , unless they are causing problems. I guess it depends on the vet...maybe their way of dealing with this issue has changed, it would be interesting to know why. In any case, congratulations and have an awesome Christmas with your new addition. |

Puppy
No that's a picture I googled to see what this puppy is going to roughly look like.
My wife has no idea the size of this breed. Right now he's just a little pup and he's 5 months old tomorrow and he weighs 55lbs. I'm using a collar from my last dog which was a America Staff. We lost him at 2 1/2 yrs old due to Epilepsy. I put the collar on our new puppy and it fit him. Yikes!!!! This guy really snores too! He's a riot and boy are we lucky. Just need to get his eyes fixed right away. Thanks again Bobsuruncle |

Cherry Eye
This is what Cherry Eye looks like.
I have lots of experience with obediance training and from what I'm seeing in his disposition. He'll be a great one!!! Caesar and I will be jogging and walking everyday!!! I have 2 boys 9 & 11 yrs old who need to jump in quick with the training as he will be a handful for them. Bobsuruncle Last edited by Bobsuruncle; December 7th, 2007 at 10:56 AM. |

I hope you can find someone that has experence in this feild....
does it seem to bother him?? does it hurt the pup?? I was reading about it.. it looks painful  but once they are on the bandwagon they will be able to handle him........ 9 and 11 are always ready to go play ..........outside with him......and you can train while playing you should have alot of fun together, boys and all

Cherry Eye
Hello Breeze
It seems like he doesn't even know he has it. He doesn't paw or rub it. It does looks painful but he runs around like a madman playing in the snow and so on. It mostly cosmetic from what I've read. It does block his his eyes partially so it must be affecting his vision. I have to get his record history from his last vet which I'm doing today. Once I know what he's had then I can move forward with my vet. So far the best rate I've been able to find is $700.00 in Burlington, Ont This vet has done a lot of breeds that are prone to this, especially Bull Dogs! To me that's the most important piece of information. Experience!!!! Bobsuruncle |

I agree with that Experience!!!!
sometimes we have to look high and low to find what we are looking for in experience and compassion... but once you find that you are on your way home so the saying goes.... I have a bernesse a little over a year and boy she is hyper.... she loves the snow too, lots of play outside is required I would go to the ends of the earth for her...Training is a little hard she can be sooo stuborn..and cause my boys are older they don't want to help train..

Awwwww, he's a cute little guy. I remember watching something on "Animal Precinct" about the cherry eyes and them needing to be fixed. I know some breeds are more prone than others. I'd say if it's not too pricey and seems better for him, do it. But, of course ask your vet! I know you know that though. Congrats on the new pup!

Caesar
Well it's been only 2 days that we've owned him and he ate through our basement door. We only stepped out for a few hours!!!!
Guess his eyes aren't that bad!!! LOL May have to consider crate training but then that defeats one of the purposes of having him watching the house while were out! Bobsuruncle |

Good for you I like it better "au natural" , (although my foster great dane has hers cropped , she's cute nonetheless) your pup is gorgeous and yes , he is going to be BIG !!!!

Safer for crate training. What the heck can a puppy do to protect the house.
LOL get an alarm system. Anyone who wants to rob your house will, dog or no dog. Just the matter is if the dog gets in the way you may lose more than precious jewels. I have a rottweiler, and never would I want him to protect the house. That is why they made systems for that. LOL It is safer for the pup to be crate trained more many reasons. No chance of being injured( no collar in the crate) and 2, saves your house. By the way, I like them better not cropped |

Can you buy an alarm until he is crate trained and trusted to be no harm to himself and your house? There really is nothing wrong with crating and setting up some boundaries first! Then let him have the freedom to roam your home and be a protector? He is just a puppy right now..

I Agree
I agree with you about letting him roam and get to know his family and home. I've only had him 2 days and he's testing us! LOL
My wife found him up on all fours on our kitchen table! Unbelievably funny! He sure is getting to know us. We will be buying a crate tomorrow!! I'll let Ceasar know he's the 1st Cane Corso. Very cool! Ist day (Eats Door) 2nd day (up on table) 3rd day (in crate) Owning a puppy, Priceless! Thanks again and I really like your site here and the warm welcome. Sincerely, Bobsuruncle |
