Exclamation My maltese (Duke) urinates a lot and loses his balance

Duke is 6 years old and recently had a small growth (tumor) removed from his left hind quarter. We have had him back to the vet several times where blood tests and urine tests were clear. He urinates in his bed at night and every 30 minutes during the day. He is also drinking water frequently. He also seems very weak, walks with his tail down, ears down, doesn't bark, and often stumbles when walking and has even slipped on stairs and fallen over. He is constantly hungry and ravenous with his food (special gastro product from vet). Any help or ideas would be deeply appreciated. He was until recently very athletic, good natured, loved to play and happy. Now he is just the opposite.

Sorry to hear of your dogs recent health situation.

What has your vet said about all of this?

The vet has no answer for the stumbling/weakness/loss of balance. He says the urine sample showed that he is obviously drinking more than he needs. He does not want us to limit his water intake as he could become dehydrated. He wonders if it could be psychosomatic. Blood tests indicates some gastro intestinal questions, possibly a gastric ulcer, for which he has had some medication and the special food which Duke loves and we feed him twice a day in limited quantities. It is a mixture of canned and softened dry gastro formula food.

We are very concerned about his weakness - the loss of balance when he walks. First thing in the morning he is happy and energetic for maybe five minutes and then his demeanor quickly changes to an unhappy tail-down slow moving dog.

Has the vet done a cbc (routine blood work?) to check for infection, elevated white blood cell count and pancreatic enzymes?

If I were you, and your vet hasn't done this considering what you're telling me I'd get a second opinion and ask vet #1 for a copy of the results from recent tests done. Tell them you want it incase you need to take the dog to emergency after hours.j

Has your vet suggested a ACTH Stimulation? For Addison/Cushings Syndrome?
(just a thought)

Definitely get a second opinion. When a vet says it's "psychosomatic", that smells fishy to me.

Unless he means "stressed"...a stressed or nervous dog could exhibit some of those behaviors (but not all of them). Are you doing some kind of new routine with him?

Keep cleaning his bed, or give him one of your old shirts to sleep on to help him feel relaxed at night.

Put stair tread rugs on the steps to keep him from slipping.

Keep an up-beat attitude. If you are acting all worried around him, he's going to pick up on that and reflect it.

...and get to a second vet.
