New to Pets.ca with a question

Hi All,

Just logged on to pets.ca as it seems to have a lot of great information.

I'm a dog owner, Vinnie a pound mut 5-6 years, Husky Lab sort of guy.

He doesn't seem to know about water or swimming so I was trying to find out where in the Vancouver area I can go to teach him outdoors.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't really want to go to Sunset Beach/Burrard inlet area due to the quality of the water. Fun to play but not to swim there.

Thanks

Toby

Hello,

I have a 110lb German Sheppard and a 80lb Golden Retriever/ Border collie Mix...both dogs are crazy about the water. It wasn't always that way with the German sheppard. Slowly over about 6 months ( and watching the other dog swim) he began to creep further and further in...now we can't get him out! not sure about BC but if you can take him somewhere where he can watch other dogs swim, it may help! Good Luck!

my dog didnt swim until he saw another dog do it so if you want him to try it out let him go with a friend, but some dogs (like people) dont like swimming so give it a shot and if not let it go you can still play on the beach

Thanks

Thanks for the replies.

He seems to run and follow other dogs but when they swim he stops at paw level.

He pretty much follows me anywhere so I figure I'll just wade in and see what happens.

Welcome to the forum. West Vancouver (Ambleside) has a huge dog park right on the water. The beach isn't the greatest at low tide (lots of barnacles) but otherwise it's great. Also, in the same place if you walk all the way through as if you were going to park royal mall you will actually walk along where the river comes out and there are some good swim spots there.

I also often walk along Lynn River which has a few good swim spots. You can access that off of exit 22 near the second narrows bridge.

Other spots include Barnett Marine Park, follow the trail down to around the end and there are a few great spots there.

Good luck.

My dog avoids puddles, so I'm no help with the swimming question, I just wanted to say welcome to the board and what a happy looking pooch you have there. Welcome.
