Dog with goopy discharge in eyes - Answered by Dr. Van Lienden
She is a 2 y.o. Irish setter. Last week her left eye was discharging a goopy whitish-yellow with her right eye doing the same but far far less amount. I waited over the weekend to see if it got better and it seems to be improved with just a little discharge today but now the right eye is discharging like the left did last week. She doesn't paw the eyes nor are they swollen, bloodshot or red or exhibiting any signs of trauma. Her vision seems fine as she can definitely spot the slighest squirel or bird movements on our walks. I've been cleaning the corner of her eyes with a damp cloth.
I'm wondering if I should try polysporin for the eyes. |

Since there is no redness/swelling/squinting/etc. in your description, then I would suggest using a sterile eyewash/lubricant to minimize any inflammation that airborne irritants such as dust and pollen can cause. Most of these solutions are available over the counter in your drugstore, and commonly use methylcellulose to lubricate the eye. Human preparations are safe to use.
Avoid things like Visine (designed to remove the "red" from the eye) for any longterm treatment, they frequently make the eye problem worse over time simply of a rebound effect when the small vessels are fatigued by being constricted over a long time. Obviously, if this simple treatment is ineffective, then a vet visit is in order. Thx for your response Dr. Van Lienden.
It turns out that I had to take Kelly to the vet anyways for her paw/cuticle that she kept licking until it bled. The vet couldn't see anything wrong other than that it was infected, possibly due to a trauma to the nail. So I have her on antibiotics for the paw and Fucithalmic Vet eye gel that worked wonders - the discharge stopped almost the next day but I'm to apply it for another day or so.
