Brown discharge in female Boxer 8 weeks after having puppies

Hey guys

A friend of mine recently got a Boxer. The people she got her from were not good people. They had a Rottie, a GSD and this Boxer. They bred her to the GSD, which is completely disgusting. She has to be the smallest Boxer I have ever seen. They told my friend she was 3 yrs old, but she isn't even a year yet (but still very small for her age). I checked her teeth and she doesn't even have all her adult teeth. Anyway, she had the puppies about 8 weeks ago. The people kept the puppies but gave the mother away. My friend has an appt. with Dr. Stelfox for a full physical, bloodwork, x-rays, poo panel etc. next Monday, so I would hate for her to have to see another vet that may or may not be any good (we have an abundance of those here). The dog has a lot of energy but she is losing her coat, extremely thin and now just started having some vaginal discharge. My friend described it as looking like a brownish (old blood?) clump of egg white consistency. Of course I immediately thought of Pyometra as soon as she said vaginal discharge, but I have never had an unspayed female, so I don't have any experience with that at all, and everything I could find said it would be just pussy with a foul odor, which it isn't. I was hoping maybe someone that knows more about it could tell me if that's a possibility and if we should get her in to see a different vet rather than waiting until Monday. Again, she does have a good appetite and energy, so she doesn't act sick, but I know that doesn't always mean she will be ok. Thanks to anyone with a little insight!!

Robyn

Sorry your dog had to go through this. Please get her to a vet now. Later when she is healthy again please get her spayed.

Shay, it isn't my dog. I have my hands full with Thorin and Nookie lol. She is getting her spayed, most likely next week when she has the physical, as long as everything "checks out" health wise. The appt is 3 days from now. I guess my question is this:

Do I have my friend take her to a vet who may or may not know what they're doing now (Shaun and I went through several with Nookie until we found Dr. Stelfox, who is amazing, then Dr. Marsden), or would it be ok to wait the 3 days and see the vet we know is very knowledgeable and thorough? If we can't see Dr. Stelfox or Dr. Marsden's (Steve or Karen), we won't see any others, unless, of course, it's an emergency which we pray doesn't happen. I just don't trust anyone else. We have had so many misdiagnosis and general lack of caring from all the vets we've see except the 3 I named.

The discharge is worrisome for sure--after 8 weeks she shouldn't still be having discharge from the pregnancy. The coat probably isn't indicative of a problem--the mother often blows her coat due to the stress of caring for the pups.

What you're describing--a gelatinous brownish mass--sounds like she's passing clots. I don't know how serious that might be--but if your friend sees any gross blood or even reddish clots, I'd get her in ASAP, regardless of having the appt on Monday. If the dog gets lethargic or goes off her food, same thing.

Is she eating and drinking well now?

Another suggestion--have your friend call up Dr Stelfox's office and explain what's happening. Ask them if that's something that can wait for three days. If they deem it necessary, I'll bet they can squeeze her in on an emergency basis.

Thank you Hazel

The dog, Koda, is eating, drinking, playing normally. She does have some soft stools and most likely has worms, so that will be checked in the physical. The problem is that Dr. Stelfox only works Mon. - Wed. The reason I hesitate for my friend to see any of the other vets at that clinic is because the main vet there (little old guy that owns the clinic) misdiagnosed Nookie with Masicatory Myositis and almost had us allowing him to put Nookie under anesthesia to take muscle samples all the way to the skull. Luckily, we contacted our specialist first who was horrified. Nookie had Pred Head, not MMM. Then he diagnosed him with Megaesophagus. Another vet there diagnosed him with Hemolytic Anemia and had us horrified and told us if we cared about him at all, we would put off our trip to the states last Christmas. I emailed Dr. Marsden who had me email him the test results and said the fact that they diagnosed him with that and scared us was ludicrous. Nookie did not have Hemolytic Anemia and Dr. Marsden told us to go on our trip. Then another vet there had us feeding Nookie a certain diet. The amount he gave me was way too low, so Nookie was literally starving. When I told Dr. Stelfox how much we were feeding him and that I was concerned because he was losing so much weight, she freaked out and had us triple the amount. A vet at the first clinic had us almost ready to put Nookie down at 6 months saying he had a fungal infection in his lungs. So I'm very wary when it comes to vets here.

I am taking Thorin in for chemo today with Dr. Stelfox's cancer partner, Dr. Streletsky. I'll ask her if she thinks Koda should be seen right away. If so, maybe she can take a look at her. She seems to be ok, though she has only administered chemo for us, nothing else.
And thank you again

Robyn, good luck to Thorin today with his chemo treatment. I hope he takes it well.

Thanks to you for taking so much time to care about Koda. I'm sure you'll make the right decisions your compass seems to be pretty well set.

Be careful and take care of yourself too! You're a very important person you know.

Oh, that's a good idea!

Hope Thorin does well with the chemo treatment today and you get some sound advice about Koda! When is Thorin's appt?

DD, Koda is such a sweet baby girl. If you met her, you would see it's impossible not to care
Thanks to YOU for always caring about us

Hazel, his appt. was at 2:30 today. All went well with the chemo, thank you
He only has one treatment left. Hopefully this will give us a few extra months with him. I must say if I ever had to make the choice for chemo again, knowing what I know about the way it works for dogs, I wouldn't even hesitate

I spoke with Dr. Streletsky about Koda. She said as long as she is still energetic and eating, she will be fine to wait. She said it could be many things from mild to severe, but as long as she is acting normal there's nothing to worry about at this point and she should be fine until the appt. on Monday. She also said she is the one who is on call all weekend, so if Koda starts acting out of the ordinary, loses her appetite or gets lethargic, we can give her a call and she will meet us at the clinic rather than having to go to the emergency clinic. So everything went well today!!

*hugs* to you both, and thank you

Just thought I would give an update. Koda was taken to the vet on that Monday. Seems the discharge was just left over from having the puppies, so no infection

She was in a bit of rough shape though. The people who owned her previously did not take care of her. They said she had only been to a vet once and that was for her first set of shots
Dr. stelfox "thinks" she's about 2 yrs old, but isn't sure. She doesn't have all her teeth in yet and that could be from malnutrition. She does have whipworms, like my lil Nookie Monster. The people my friend got her from said she had cataracts and was 50% blind in one eye. Dr. Stelfox said they are not cataracts and she is 100% blind in that eye, likely due to trauma
But overall, she's ok
With some love, good food and a bit of training, she will be a wonderful girl

She will be going in to be spayed once she is in a little better shape, physically and emotionally. They figure about a month

A pretty good checkup for Koda all in all, considering the bad start she was subjected to! She's so lucky to be in good hands now!

Nookie and Thorin kissies!

Robyn,I just read all the posts and I am really happy Thorin is handling the chemo ok...are you saying he might only have a few months
I was hoping the chemo would eliminate the cancer,he is such a beautiful boy

What absolute morons would breed a smallish Boxer with a GSD
I am so glad your friend adopted her and that she has you helping her out, hopefully all goes well with Koda

chico, the people who owned her before had to be complete morons, for sure. Poor little Koda is about 1/2 the size of most female Boxers I've seen. She is just so petite, and apparently fully grown now. I'm surprised she didn't have issues giving birth, poor girl.

As for Thorin, the type of cancer he has can't be cured
It stems from his immune system and there are likely cells all through his bone marrow and organs. The goal of the chemo is to hold off the growth of the cells for as long as possible. With the side effects being almost nothing (he has handled it very well), it was worth the cost to us. It's when they form the tumors that we will have serious issues. Without chemo his prognosis was very poor with the lifespan being 3-6 months at the most. With the chemo, the average lifespan is 18 months. So potentially, the chemo could give him another full year to a year and a half, which would be wonderful. Any time we get with him is treasured

It will be a very, very sad day when we have to let him go. He is my soul dog
