Cat with fat pouch
My one year old cat is healthy and slender but he has developed a pouch of skin that hangs down between his rear legs. He was neutered as a kitten and eats well. He doesn't mind if I rub his belly including this pouch. It just feels soft and flabby. Is this something that needs to be checked out?

I have 2 male tabbies with the same thing. I think it's just some extra skin, but I have never been worried about it. The vet that nutered them didn't say anything about it either. It might be a male cat thing as my female doesn't have it.

All three of my cats have the pouch. 2 females and 1 male. The Males is ALOT larger than the females but they are still not a year old.

Frankie (my female) has it, Sammy(male) does not. I was worried because I thought it was "pudge"--she likes to eat but it is just extra skin. I call it her "purse"

All cats have extra skin, it is partly why they can survive long falls (they spread their legs and the loose skin forms a sort of parachute). Less active cats develop a layer of fat on the inside of the skin, and it tends to hang down around their belly to give the pouchy look. Neutered males are especially susceptible. It's nothing to worry about as long as the skin feels loose and has no unusual lumps.

Glad you mentioned the parachute comment and not I. *Practicing respect* I do appreciate the image and the laugh. I need to study more on the aerodynamics of a cat. Disclaimer: No subject's will be harmed.

I'm glad you all appreciated the parachute imagery... it's true, though! A cat is actually more likely to survive a fall from a higher story than from a lower story, because the higher they are, the more time they have to flip themselves into the correct position and spread their "wings".

"Bat wings" are not allowed anymore in the US. Jumpsuits with extra material that allow a slower descent caused many a false sense of security which ended with a late pilot chute opening. When in free fall, sky divers do what is called relative work. It's a form of art..if you have been to an airshow you may have seen this. They join their bodies in different postions to form a shape. Quickly I may add. The jumpsuit has a little bit of fabric extending to aid in the flight and also "grippers". Grippers help your neighbor to hold on for a certain manuever. Depending on the altitude and air density of the exit sometimes 5 or 6 different formations can be made with a small group of sky divers. Contests are held all over the world. And record breakers too.
I saw a 90 way back in 1983. 90 people held in formation for 30 seconds before breakaway..the sky got dark for a split second. (many aircraft was used for this task) Last I heard the record is up to 130 people in one jump. No cats were involved though. I have heard stories of falling cats from high altitudes. One was from Palatka, a nearby town. This guy was flying to south Florida and stopped for fuel, cat's were in carriers in the back seat, on ace. Before departing he checked on them, not realizing he left one door ajar. After he departed, while gaining altitude, the roar in the cockpit of his seatbelt hanging out the door banging on the fuselage drove him crazy..(it happens to all)..so he opened the door to retrieve it...cat jumped at the same time. Witnesses on the ground reported the cat falling...hitting the ground on all fours and darted for the trees! The cat was never found. This is a famous "sky diving" cat story in my area...I am sure it is true, the cat just wanted a home on terra firma.
