Smelly Cat

Hey all. Some of you know that we recently picked up a new kitten from the Newmarket OSPCA branch. Her name is Marble, and she's a tortie, about 3 1/2 months old. It's been a while since I've had a kitten, and I have one question that I'm hoping you all can help me with.

This kitten STINKS! OMG you wouldn't believe the stink that can come out of such a small kitten! She farts worse than characters from South Park! She's almost toxic!

We've had her stool tested twice...both negative for parasites. At first, we thought it was the change in diet, but it's been a while that she's been with us now...a few weeks at least...and she still clears the room.

We had started her on Science Diet's Nature's Best, because the day hubby brought her home, my shopping options were limited. We've since picked up a bag of Wellness, and we've been giving her half a serving of each. Her litterbox is insane. We clean it daily, and what comes out of it almost weighs more than she does.

Is it normal for a kitten this age to put out these kinds of fumes? Will it get better with age, or am I looking at 20 years of blaming it on the cat (at least the dog is off the hook! )?

Well Mr. Mickey( 10 months) here could give her a run for her money I'm sure! I had that with my Windy too, and it lasted until she was almost a year old, and she gets bouts of the farts any time I change food, I figure she's just got a sensitive belly. Kittens are always smelly! There's lots going on in those growing bodies!

You might want to try giving Marble a pinch of probiotics from a health food store (I like Natural Factors Ultimate Multi). It could be that her intestinal bacteria is unbalanced. And I would strongly recommend eventually switching her over to wet food instead of kibble. It's entirely possible that she's having issues digesting all that grain. www.catinfo.org

Since you are feeding her a mix of the two foods that may also be causing the digestive upset, one being of higher quality and one being more filler.

I found since switching Jasper to Nature's Variety Instinct (canned) and raw that his poops and tummy issues have gone from being horrid to almost no smell. You may want to consider changing her food to a low carb, canned diet.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. Thankfully, the bag of Science Diet is almost done. Once the Wellness dry is almost done, I'll see how she takes to canned. Can't see her turning her nose up at it...this kitten is basically a stomach with legs. We have to stop her from diving head-first into our dinner plates. I can't even leave a cup of coffee on my desk or she'll jump up and drink it!

Rainbow, I've been singing that song for weeks now. Thought I'd spread the joy around.

No need to wait until the dry is done. In fact, since with cats there can be a narrow window of opportunity while they're kittens to get them used to trying new foods, it would be a really good idea to start introducing some wet food right away. You don't have to feed it exclusively until the Wellness is finished.
