my shih tsu is licking the carpet

He is almost 8 years old and started obsessively licking the carpet tonight, especially where the walls meet the floors.. Cannot sleep. Then he coughs up hair. Will take to vet if it continues, but need advice asap..
Thanks,
Randi

They have those sprays that is bitter to the taste. Maybe you can spray that on the areas he frequently licks. This might work and deter him from doing it.

Could there be something hiding in the carpet that he's trying to get to? When we pulled all of our carpet up, we found tiny worm-like insects curled up along the borders (eeeww! ).

Sudden and unusual behaviors like this must be checked out by the vet. Could be anything from a very upset stomach to a neurological problem!

They're called Carpet Beetles. Nothing to get freaked out over. The cleanest of houses have them.
