Chows sneezing out mucus

I have two chow's, one is 2 years and the other is 5 months. About 4 days ago I noticed that my 2 year old chow's nose had a trace of dried blood on it and he began sneezing out thick green and brown mucus...now today I noticed that my 5 month old chow has done the same, although she doesn't have a cut on her nose. I spoke to a few people who said that it may just be a cold. Is it possible for dogs to simply have a cold, or should I be seeking vet attention? I wonder also, if it may be some type of infection as my husband and I did take them walking by a river where they were drinking the water. Any comments are greatly appreciated.
