113 kitties fixed today!
I volunteered today for my first mass spay/neuter clinic! It was great! In total we fixed 113 kitties! Wooooooo! I worked at the services station with my friend Cat. We did FeLV/FIV tests, flea treatments, ear cleaning/ear mite treatments and nail clipping. All of our kitties that were tested for FeLV or FIV were also negative! We got a bunch of feral cats fixed and eartipped and their vaccines as well!
I had never gotten to be in the surgery room before as I usually do paperwork, but I was sort of watching them fix the kitties and it was like... so quick and easy! I thought it was a little more complicated then that. Nope! We started surgery around 8:30 and were done a little before 1. I was just watching the vets and they just took the kitty, gave it a little laughing gas (it was already given an injectable tranquilizer) and they were like slice, snip snip stitch stitch. It was just amazing how fast it was done So yes, something happy for us all to focus on... 113 less un-fixed kitties! The next clinic is in about 3 weeks and they are expecting about the same number of kitties. So wooo yayyyy! It was such a huge success today. The kitties were so funny when they were knocked out. Whenever someone found a cute kitty that was waiting in line to get fixed, they would just pick it up and be like LOOK HOW CUTE THIS ONE ISS!!!! and we'd all be like AWWWw (it was all women volunteers and 2 male vets) LOL I mean, all the kitties were cute but I dunno, we are weird. so the kitty was already knocked out so it would just be dangling there and we'd all be like AWWWW cute kitty!!! And the kitty was like blahhhhh just chilling there. So high five to all the volunteers at the clinic and a high five for 113 less baby making kitties in the world !!!

It's $35 per house cat, $25 per feral if the group is of 3 or more. It includes rabies and distemper vaccines as well as an injectable antibiotic and absorbable sutures. Here is the link for more info: http://ccasnj.org/clinic/clinic.html It's really a neat thing. I don't know of any other county shelter that offers something like this.

Maybe next time I'll step up to the plate I was tempted to ask what they did with all the um, 'stuff' because I never saw any body parts going anywhere. I think they were wrapping it all up with the paper and putting it into some hazardous waste bin. I had a yucky job dealing with the combo tests and stuff. I can't draw blood yet and really don't think I'll be able too anytime soon. I was helping find the veins and stuff though. A couple times fleas would jump off the kitties and I was like eeep! We treated them though so they'll be all good

I was incharge of eartipping as well. We use a big pair are surgical scissors to tip their ears. I was scared to do it at first, but I tipped my first feral and he did not bleed I did make a few other ferals bleed though, but I know how to use the 'siptic stop' or whatever it is called that you use for stopping bleeding in animals. That yellow powder stuffs.
We did have a few escapees, but our surgical area was a big room in the back of the building and so the doors were closed. It was funny though... I can't wait to help out at the next clinic! I'm going to be trapping some myself hopefully and see how that goes. My no-kill shelter has a goal this year of fixing 10,000 animals (other then shelter pets) So far: 7,788 spayed/neutered in 2008 and counting! So whooooo! We also have a mobile spay/neuter van that is pretty cool. So between the county shelters clinic that will fix aprx. 11,000 cats this year, their in house clinic (still low prices) which will fix another couple thousand, and my no-kill shelters goal of 10,000 getting fixed using their low cost clinic (attached to the shelter) and their mobile spay/neuter van we should get a heck of alot of baby-making kitties fixed this year! After the next clinic we will have the final count for kitties fixed for the year and I'll be happy to share that with everyone.

Wow 10,000 spay and neuters . Where do the vets come from and the funding to do so?
Out of curiosity, how long did it take to do a spay and a neuter?

For mass clinic, we just paid the 2 vets for the day at about 200 dollars each vet. and it took about 10 minutes for a spay and 5 minutes for a neuter. From start to finish, it took each cat about 20 minutes to get around the circle. Then they were placed in recovery and we had volunteers in there to check them all out and make sure everyone was breathing okay and no one was bleeding. That was about it.

That is amazing! What a dream that would be to have a vehicle like that - where did the funding come for the van? Is it owned by the humane society?

Here is a group we lend the van out too: http://stafnj.org/category.php?show=13 They are nice people. They give out free spay/neuters all the time to poor people. So basically the funding comes from private donations and sponsorships by businesses. Nutro (pet food) actually sponsors a pretty big chunk of my no-kill shelter. In exchange we have to put their name on stuff and give out free samples.. but really not a huge deal because I think they give us a fair amount of money to keep us going. My no-kill shelter operates on a fairly large budget of like, 2 million a year, and the county shelter about half a million. We really rely on the general public to help us out though.

That is awesome! I love these marathons! I once neutered 15 cat's in 10 minutes.
(Neutering cat's is too easy) High fives to your crew! We now have "Operation Catnip" through the University of Florida....they ear clip too. it to identify an already done feral. When I started working with animals 30 years ago we had nothing. I have to say we have come a long way...not without much pain, but they are growing pains. Our critters will benefit for the future..keep the momentum going. Good job!

Great to hear I love the ear tipping thing. It really works! Our animal control people will not take feral cats that are part of TNR programs and the shelters will send them back if anyone tries to drop them off. All the shelters around here are really starting to go pro-TNR and especially the county shelter. They absolutely do not want feral cats coming to the shelter and the poor shelter workers being stuck with the task of putting them down  so they work VERY hard to get the word out on TNR and try to turn away feral kitties as often as they can.

Florida has a huge feral cat colony problem. Under operation "Cat Nip" in our area , all feral cat's tested negative for fiv & felv must be returned to where they came from. All positive cat's are euthanised. To stop the spread of the disease.
All healthy cats released that are sterile and vaccinated, well, the colony would eventually disappear, cats are territorial. If they can not breed, neither does the feral colony. The VA hospital in Gainesville, (Veterans of war) is one of our state largest hospitals for people who have served for our country and were wounded, etc. They have a colony of feral cats that have (for generations) befriended many resident over time. These cats are now protected. I have been there many times and seen these guys.. they jump in the bushes when a stranger walks by, but let a lone person come wheeling out in a wheelchair for a smoke and they are over him! I just love it. Operation Catnip helped out...that is good. I do not think there will be a loss of cat's being dropped of though. So the cycle begins again.
