Dog's eye changing color - Answered by Dr. Slome
My mom has a 5 year old dachshund that has one blue eye and one brown. The blue eye has just turned brown. I get scared at any changes in my babies, but my mom is not alarmed by this. Is this normal and I am just over-reacting?

I have heard of brown eyes turning blue but never vice-versa. When it turns blue, it's because the pigment is deficient, so I'm guessing when it's the other way around, the pigment has started to be made and the eye is it's natural color. Why not call your vet to be sure? I'm sure they can answer this one over the phone.

Usually when eyes change colour, it is due to age and genetics but this would usually happen before 6 months old. While I would not suggest panic, I would not be able to say it is normal. I would have the eye checked by your Vet, or by Veterinary Ophthalmologist if needed, to ensure that there is no problem. There are malignancies like melanomas, that can be responsible for pigmentary changes, but sometimes the pigmentary changes may be benign and nothing to worry about. I personally do not like to wait and see ( excuse the pun ) when it comes to eyes - you either have vision or not, no second chances if you wait too long sometimes.
