motion sickness

Im having a problem with missy she tends to always get sick when she's in the van,and usualy happens when we are about 15 minutes into our drive.
She is due for a check up soon but is there anything i can buy in the meantime that can settle her stomach for a car ride or is this something that needs to be prescribed by the vet....

I really recommend asking the vet. The only thing I know is children's gravol (check the dosage) but that can last three hours or more (drowsiness and antinausea). Ask the vet if there is anything milder... I know there is Atavet that is stronger. We gave our big guy 3 pills that were supposed to knock him a little bit out for 12 hours--- he was sooo sleepy for 3 days. He even slept in the middle of the afternoon in the dog park.

I've never heard of anything weaker than gravol-- what if you fast her before going to the vet (if the appointment is in the morning). I do that anyway, in case something goes wrong and they need blood tests.

Thanks Prin the vet is only a couple of minutes away. This is just for pleasure rides with with me. My vet wont push up missy's appoinment so i was looking for something just to help in the meantime,It's a shame she cant enjoy car ride with our other dog,but i think i will just wait until her appointment and have something perscribed for her.I thought there might be something i could buy off the shelf at a pet store.

I liked that pun:
"try doing a search on ginger and see what comes up". It made me laugh even though I'm not sure it was on purpose.

Can the doggie see outside while you ride? Maybe if it's such a short trip, even if you're really not supposed to, sit the dag in the front seat with a seatbelt harness. Maybe with the view ahead, the doggie will be less car sick?

Short trips are fine,Its the long trips when she gets sick,I would never put my dog in the front seat,Most traffic accidents happen only a few minutes away from home plus if the air bag went off during an accident it would surely kill or hurt my dog.

thanks for your wise advice

Our last foster dog was horrified of the car, he would get sick and poop and cry the whole time. When he was adopted we took him to his new home and it was a 2 hr drive, we didn't want his new mommy and daddy to have to go through this so we offered to take him up also we thought he would be more at ease with us.

He didn't get any brekky that morning instead before we left I gave him 7 all natural ginger snap cookies and this did the trick, we also took our 2 dogs for the drive to comfort him and stopped a few times on the way so he could go to the bathroom and get some fresh air.

Reilly is a 2 yr old german shepherd aprox 70 lbs. We were going to give him gravol but I didn't want him all doped up and then realize after he came more aware that we were gone so I tried the cookies and they worked and boy did he love them!

Good luck with your baby, hopefully lots of short trips maybe to fun places will help her overcome this. Reilly's problem was that his previous owners only ever took him to the vet so he thought car rides were bad things. For the time we had him we took him lots of places that were fun and all about him, he loved the idea but if the ride was to long look out lol.

A wonderful medication and it is found in a health food store is cocculine. You can get it at Jean Coutu or a SuperValu (whatever grocery chain sells President's Choice in your part of Canada).
