severe skin condition on my english bulldog and it stinks

I have a 3 year old English bulldog and for the last year I have been battling a skin condition. I have been to my vet many many times and have spent all kinds. For the longest time my vet said it was a food allergy so we did horsemeat and lentils for months and when that didnt help we did vet allergy food. nothing. He gets crusty and red on his chest area near where armpits are and he gets what seems like an ear infection where it at times oozes out. Ive researched this and he seemed to have all the signs of yeast infection so we had him on antibiotics and changed his food to orijen brand. It clears up for a bit and then comes back. Does anyone have any ideas on what it can be.

Is the bulldog purchased from a breeder? as these kinds of things are hereditary so the breeder may be able to assist.

Did your vet take a skin scrapping sample to rule out mange / demodex ?

Antibiotics will not treat a yeast infection. In fact, antibiotic use can CAUSE yeast infections.

Orijen contains starchy potatoes, which is something else you want to avoid if yeast really is the problem. I wonder how your dog would do if fed a plant-free raw meat diet (whole-prey model)? Supplementing with probiotics may also be a good idea.

There's an interesting article on yeast infections in dogs that you may want to check out: http://www.thewholedog.org/ArtYeast.html

Mugsymom - would you happen to live on the South Shore of Montreal? I ask this because I met this wonderful lady at DMV with her bulldog that had a yeast infection. If not, my apologies as I had to ask.

What brand of orijen are you using?

If it is a yeast infection, indeed certain anibotics can actually encourage the presense of yeast. You will need to ask the vet more about the meds given.

Have you tried a shampoo called: DermaBenSs? Ask your vet if this could help.
