Puppy with distemper
I am going to be adopting a puppy (12 weeks old) who was born to a mother and littermates who all died from distemper. He was also sickly for a while (diarrhea, no appetite, fever) but seems to be fine now (for the past 6 weeks) I am receiving conflicting advice about distemper vaccinations. I am told by some that since he had distemper he will never need to be vaccinated against it. Others say that he should be vaccinated. I admit I am afraid as I have heard that even though he appears totally recovered, the disease could be dormant, and a vaccination could make it full blown and kill him. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this?

Poor puppy. Shame on whoever bred a dog and didn't even bother vaccinating her! These deaths were so unnecessary.
Since distemper is incurable, I don't see how vaccinating against it in a dog who already has it would be of any benefit...?? You might want to read this article. Distemper |
