Sudden Death
--female border collie age is less than 4 years old--
Labor Day weekend our girl starting acting and looking like a different dog all together. She wouldn’t come out of her igloo and didn’t want anything to do with us. Once I noticed she wasn’t eating or drinking and had stopped urinating and having bowel movements and then discovered she had vomited twice, we took her to the vet. But first--prior to that weekend she was on a walk and she had actually went flat to the ground and wouldn’t or couldn’t get up. It was like her back legs wouldn’t carry her. My roommate who was walking her at the time picked her up and carefully carried her all the way home. She seemed fine when I arrived a short time later and she wasn’t acting like she was having any pain or any more difficulty. Until that weekend when everything changed forever. Once at the vet the doctor said she wasn’t dehydrated and her temperature and blood pressure all seemed fine. He took her blood (I can post the blood work results.) They put her on an IV and gave her an antibiotic shot along with a Vitamin B shot and at the end of the day we picked her up. She really seemed to be feeling a lot better. When the blood results were in the vet said her toxicity levels were high in her liver and kidneys and that she eaten something poisonous. Honestly, I have nothing out that she could have gotten into and I know for sure she wasn’t eating any of the plants. So to get the facts straight these are the days she had an IV administered to her: Monday September 6, 2004 Tuesday September 7, 2004 Friday September 10, 2004 Tuesday September 14, 2004 Also on Tuesday 9-14 the vet took her blood again and the test results showed she was improving. We were told to expect a slow recovery and that’s exactly what we were experiencing. She seemed better. She looked better. Her eyes were clear and bright and on some days she really seemed to be almost back to normal. Other days she was not as energetic as she had always been. Sometimes she seemed to have problems standing almost like she was losing her balance but that would pass as quickly as it came on. And she wasn’t jumping up on the bed or couch like before. But I really thought she was recovering. Her last day was October 2. After spending a couple of hours in the late afternoon, resting as well as playing on the beach. she stretched out went to sleep forever. I will miss Daisy’s beautiful soul forever. She will always be my sweetest angel, love dog. I feel like the vet really didn’t do enough and now I must find out what caused this. Up until that first weekend she wasn’t sick a day. If she had been poisoned could the initial poisoning have killed her? What kind of poison would do this? I’ve heard of juvenile and ‘older’ dog kidney disease but can kidney disease come from nowhere and do this in a month time? Thank you. |

I am so very soory to hear about your loss. Our thoughts are with you!
I personally feel that Daisy should have gone to the vet the very first instance this happened. Your roomate should have taken her in. But hide sight is always 20/20 and that doesn't bring her back. It's very well possible that she could ahve eaten something on that walk. It might have taken a while to get through her system. I don't know much about poisoning, I'm sorry. Once again, I am very sorry to hear about your beloved pet. |

Oh...that is all so terrible, I am so sorry for your loss, there is no doubt though that she is in a wonderful place now. {{{{HUG}}}}
Having said that, did you request an autopsy to see what actually killed her? Did the vet give you any idea? And is there a park or certain area (you mentioned the beach) where she may have had contact with a poison? Here in Toronto, there have been some very sick sick people putting poison out in parks and razor blades in the sand at the beaches, etc....so you never know what might have happened. But if the situation was one where something in a park or beach was put there intentionally maybe your investigation could save other lives.

I am so sorry for your loss. Certain poisons can do these things. I had a dog poisoned and each type of poison reacts differently. Did you have a necropsy done on her. If you can I would do it, this might put your mind at ease that you did all you could. It sounds like you did.

I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your friend.
Is it possible she could have got into any anti-freeze? This causes vomitus, mental confusion, collapse, kidney failure and death. Zinc Phosphide (a rodenticide) causes severe gastritis, abdominal distension, vomitus, hypoglycemic shock and death. Unfortunately without a necropsy, you may never know. Do check her "areas of interest" for any unusual objects, food, etc. May your fond memories warm your heart always. |
