Unhappy My 6 week old puppy has had 4 Grand Mal Seizures in 36 hours

I am the very proud new parent of a 6 week old basset hound puppy named Horton. We brought him home on Saturday night. Sunday night at 11:30pm he began to seize. I have never seen this in a dog or puppy and I rushed him to the Emergency Vet. Since I didn't know what happened and the seizure was over before I got to the vet, the vet couldn't do anything. Horton had another seizure on Monday morning around 6am and I took him to our vet at 7am. The vet is still running test on him today, however he seized again at 2:30 yesterday afternoon and 2:30 am last night. The vet seems stumped and is suggesting that it could be portosystemic shunt. This is tearing me apart and I don't know what to do. The breeder I purchased him from is refusing to take ANY responsibility for him, and says he was fine until I took him home. HELP!?!?!

I am so sorry that you are having such problems with your new one. The problem here is multi-folds.

Firstly 6 weeks is FAR too young for this pup to be away from the mom. In saying this it has nothing to do with the seizures.

Secondly this is not a good breeder AT ALL. Did you recieve any health guarantee from this breeder? Are they with the AKC??

No reputable breeder would have sent home a puppy at 6 weeks of age and then deny any responsiblility if the puppy is ill.
I hope your vet can get your little one well again.

I totally agree however I am curious if there is a health guarantee. Also if this breeder is with the AKC then they can be reported.

Regardless, if this dog goes back to the breeder...well we all know what will happen.

Please OP please respond to my questions. It is very important.

Thanks for the responses

He did come with a health guarantee, but they are refusing to honor it in anyway. I don't want to give him up and I won't give him up!!! I'm so in love with him! I do however, want and need them to take at least 50% of the responsibility, especially monetarily. Including the cost of Horton, I have spent over $1000 in 48 hours. They are AKC breeders, however they refused me papers for Horton because they said it was the bloodline the wanted to compete with and did want to ever compete against their own line. That was fine with me, I just love the breed so much, and I have no ideas of ever being a breeder. Does this help? Can anyone give advice on where to go from here? I didn't know 6 weeks was too young to adopt a puppy, I guess that's my fault.

Ok Adriann22 - then you must get a hold of the AKC. I am hoping that someone here can lead you into the right direction as I am with rescue and do not have contacts with breeders.

This is plain wrong Adriann22 and you should not accept this. This breeder is using the AKC as an umbrella but it will not protect them if you pursue this matter. Get their comments in writing if you can...or e-mail anything that is indicating that they will not honour the health guarantee.

Again I am not surprised however this is a horrible situation.

I am certain someone will assist you on what you need to do next.

I wish you and your pup luck.

I just find it so hard to believe that they didn't notice him having seizures at all. If I have witnessed 4 in 36 hours. They are trying accuse me of neglect, which really makes me angry! I have tried to be nice and give them the opportunity to offer to do something without being rude and demanding that they do something. I have been communicating over email with them. However, more than them, I'm concerned for Horton and his chances of survival and his chances of a normal life.
