Hi to all members - my dog has a really bad eye infection.

Hi, my name is Melissa, and this is the first time I have posted.

I have 5 1/2 year old old German Shepherd. Recently, she has gotten an eye infection. I have taken her to the vet two times. The first time, they said that her eye was fine even though I told them that her eye had a discharge. They did not prescribe any medication at this time. Then a couple of weeks later the corner of her eye has gotten extremely red with a lot of greenish yellow discharge. I took her to the vet again and they prescribed her Bnp H Ointment which I have used for 15 days now and her infection has not cleared up. They also put in the flourecent green drops to ensure that her eye was not scratched. I am really worried that this infection is going to get worse. I will be taking her back to the vet, but I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on what this might be or what I could do to help her.

Well now, that was the wrong thing to look at while I was having breakkie!

Did the vet perscribe some antibiotics as well or just the ointment? It is possible it may take antibiotics to clear it up. Another vet visit is for sure in the mix.

I would take the dog to another vet. There is obviously a problem.

I had a rott that started with 'minor' eye problems. I went to my vet and then had 2nd and 3rd opinions. Finally he was diagnosed with cancer.

This is probably not the case for you dog, but I would rather be safe then sorry.

I think I'd try a second opinion as well, brandygirl. Eyes are nothing to mess with and if you're not getting satisfactory results with the current treatment, it's time to seek different advice.

Does the pupil look that cloudy in person, or is that a trick of the camera?

Meanwhile, you might try flushing her eye before applying the ointment you have. Get some sterile saline (not the contact lens solutions with added ingredients--just sterile saline) and rinse the eye with it before putting in the ointment. A few drops with an eye dropper should be enough. It'll sooth her eye a bit and help clean out some of the gunk.

Hi All - thanks very much for your responses.

The vet only prescribed the ointment. I have called the vet clinic and booked Brandy for another appointment. In the meantime I will pickup that saline solution as mentioned.

cc: hazelrunpack - It must be the camera. My poor girl, if its not bad enough that she has a nasty eye infection.. but me sticking a camera 6 inches from her eye trying to get a good pic must not help the situation...lol
