Tonsilitis in a cat

One of our cats began hacking, gaging, throwing up foam, and acting lethargic on Monday. We took Harley to the vet on Tuesday morning and after an exam he said the cats tonsils were swollen. He gave him a shot of Convenia, and said to call him back on Thursday.

Harley is worse today, he is hungry, but can't eat or drink, he gags it back up. I also read where Convenia isn't a good antibiotic to give, after it was too late. If the med was going to work, wouldn't it by now, its been 36 hours. Harley had all his teeth pulled out four years ago, but I read they can still get stomatitis from a tooth root that wasn't removed.

I'm calling the vet in the morning, but was wondering if anyone else had a cat with tonsil problems, if this is, and how do you get them to eat and drink, he's hungry but can't swallow.
