Garlic and Grapes..Toxic? - Pet forum for dogs cats and humans

I read on a few websites that garlic and grapes are both toxic to dogs.

However, in multiple treats I have seen in our local dog stores...there is garlic. These are treats that are homemade with no preservatives, and where the ingredients are only 5-6 things. I asked about the garlic and the shopkeeper said she had never heard that. One of the treats I give Portia has garlic in it and she doesn't appear to be any worse for the wear, though what I read about toxicity noted larger doses for long periods of time. So are we fine with infrequent treatings with it as an ingredient?

For grapes, I read that there have been cases of toxic reactions. So it was on a few lists as a no-give. However, my friend gives her dog raisins all the time and aren't raisins just dried grapes? My mother gives their Beagle grapes all summer long and he LOVES them and has never gotten sick. My girlfriend gives her Jack grapes as well. So what is the deal with grapes?

Does anyone know? Thanks in advance!

I know my Portia would love grapes, we give her ice cubes and she plays with them like on a hockey rink before crunching them happily...grapes would be similarly as fun because of their escapist abilities!

i give garlic all the time. it is a great natural flea repelant and good for dogs and humans (not too much as it can thin the blood, im told). in heavy infestation it only helps but if normal amount of fleas it works well for me. my mum reckons that you can use garlic juice as a topical flea repelant in heavey infestations, but it really stinks so im not doing it but she does and it works for her.

i have been told that grapes can be toxic, i cant remember the poster but they worked in a vet clinic and had seen a case or two, i think they mentioned red seeded grapes but im not 100% on that.
i on the other hand give my 8yo dog seedless white grapes and she has always been fine, i used to give her bag fulls when she wanted them,

but after reading a few posts from ppl i have cut it down to just a few at a time, the same with her rasins, moderation thing and all that

. most dog owners in my family give grapes, i have made them all cut down to a few at a time and no one has ever had a problem.

and you can put the grapes in the freezer and freeze them, they make nice little ice treats

and i think they taste a little like grape sorbet so yummy for humans too

I've never heard of garlic being bad, but I have heard that grapes can be toxic,
something about some enzyme in them or something...

Garlic is GOOD for dogs!!! Grape seeds are NOT. Something in the seed is toxic, but like Mel said, get the seedless ones and you should be ok.

Onions are also toxic to dogs!

I was at my Vet's last week and asked about grapes, she told me that red is ok (seedless) unless you give alot like pounds of them at one time. Some food even has grapes in it now so as long as they don't have alot at one time it is ok. My dog eat grapes and other fruit and he is fine.

actually i have noticed at times a nasty garlic breath coming out of a certain furry someone

and mix that with her normal breath and whooo, boy its unbelievable

i forgot you could get red seedless grapes, i like green seedless so that is what she gets

Does garlic power do anything for dogs other than flea's?
I wonder cause for some reason I have always given my dogs garlic brewers yeast pills. I buy at Pet Valu every summer, I understood it did help with flea's so I used them, never had a flea problem
