Angry litter training adult cat

We just adopted a 2 1/2 year old female cat from the local humane society so we know nothing about the cats life from the previous 2 1/2 years other than it was a stray when the humane society picked it up. As affectionate and beautiful as it is we have a problem! Problem is the cat does not appear to be litter trained. It urinates all over the living room carpet and once even on our bed while we were in it! I pick up bowel movements daily off the carpet aswell. We have tried putting it's bowels into the litter box. We have tried taking it to the area that it soiled right away, showing it the spot, saying "bad" and then putting it in the litter box. We've had no luck. It has only used the litter box a handful of times since we brought her home. how do we train a cat?
