Training both dogs to be off lead at same time

Both my doggies are trained to be off lead individually, but I'd like to be able to have them both out to play at the same time. They just get so darn exuberant around each other--I know they would run amok if unleashed at the same time. I have only gotten as far as 1 dog on lead, 1 dog off lead and continue to work on the obedience with both at the same time in this way. Is there another way to go about this, or am I headed in the right direction?

I had one really trained off-leash before I even thought about taking the other, way more elusive, curious doggy (Boo...) off leash...

Start in your yard if it is fenced and then try it out at a friends place a few times until they are reliable before you attempt to go to a larger space.
