LOST Rescue Dog in Calgary, AB - Update: Found!!!

REWARD!

Vilma was lost on February 11th in the Cougar Ridge area. She's a black & white female Smooth Coated Retriever. She's approximately 20" tall and 50 lbs. She was last seen in the forested area shown on the map, between 101 Street and The Calgary Academy.

She is wearing a brown collar with paw prints and dragging a 20" black leash. She is very timid and flighty and will be very difficult to approach. Please call Jen at 403-703-4390 if you even SEE her.

Any news? I hear the weather was terrible last night with blowing snow. I hope she stayed warm somehow.

Thanks so much for all the well wishes and for your offer to help, Ford Girl!

Volunteers were out all yesterday with trackers without a sign, but then we got a sighting in Aspen Ridge Estates. The volunteers almost had her, but she took off again and they couldn't find her. It turns out she was in someone's backyard for a couple of hours yesterday but they didn't "think anything of it", so we set up a trap in that area with her bed in it but it was empty this morning.

Our main concerns are, of course, the leash in case it gets caught on anything and the coyotes - which are quite a problem. She grew up in the shelter, she came in when she was a puppy and is now 3-years-old, so I can just imagine how terrified she is out there...she's never known anything outside of the shelter. I've attached an updated map of where she was yesterday, just in case anybody is in that area...

We're going out again today and are going out with trackers tonight, so let's hope we'll get her!

Thanks for the update, Chocolatecoffee. Poor Vilma....what a sad life she has had. I thought about her all last night being cold, scared and hungry.

Are you able to leave something nice and smelly for her to eat in the trap or will that just attract the coyotes? That must have been so disappointing to have almost caught her.

Sending lots of good wishes for better luck today.

See if another technique can be used the next time she is spotted.

Instead of having people call after her and try to move forward towards her, sit down nearby but don't chase or call her.

If she lived in a shelter most of her life, she's used to people. Give her a chance to approach someone.

Good luck!

They found her yesterday afternoon!!!

She went back to the house she ran away from so they were leaving food, water, her bed, etc. in the garage and she went in there once. When she saw them she trotted away (better than bolting!) so they just told her she was a good girl. They decided to turn their garage into a trap with a couple of heavy propane tanks, and 4x4" for leverage, plus a broom head for a "pin" and a long line, then waited. She showed up around 4:30 in the afternoon, sniffed around, went in to get a drink, and they pulled the pin.

She's doing absolutely great, lost a bit of weight but has decided cuddling on the couch isn't so bad. Thanks SO much for everyone's support!!!

Cool! I love when those types of "traps" work for containing animals.

That's great news!

Vilma's still doing great and is getting settled into her foster home now, but she's still looking for her forever home!

I'm still surprised she went into the garage, we had dog traps set out by a roast on a hibachi, but she just went back to the foster family's house and into their garage. And she was only there for a day before she got lost...she's a smart girl!
