Longview Stampede

Some pictures of the Longview Stampede on Saturday night, Longview, Alberta, southwest of Calgary.

Incoming!!!! Horse 1, Cowboy 0. The cowboy survived for a re-ride - his third unsuccessful try of the night - but someone in the stands needed medical help after he landed on them.

Hanging on for eight seconds was never harder.

Below, another hard landing . . . . . . this was one of those small town rodeos where the horses seemed to win a lot more than the cowboys did, Very few of the contestants managed to ride their steeds successfully.

Below, a couple of wranglers try to hold on as their objectionable quarry takes them for a rather dusty ride across the infield in the Wild Horse Race

Below, cornering hard in the Ladies Barrel Race

Below, getting ready for the Calf Roping competition on the treeless prairie

Below, the sun sets on a small town rodeo.

Although a very small village, Longview can be overrun with celebrities on occasion given it's location as the last spot of civilization for many a nearby movie or television set. Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner, Annette Benning, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhall, Anne Hathaway, Jackie Chan, etc, have all hung out here or passed through, with many autographing the walls of a local eatery. The Bews Ranch just out of town supplies horses and riding lessons to the stars. CBC productions of Heartland and Wild Roses aren't far from here. On weekends, the town is overrun with bikers and cyclists out of Calgary out for a ride and a bite to eat. Abby and Keeper pass through here most weekends on the way to Kananaskis Country to the west.

I just realized the two train wreck crashes above are the SAME cowboy!!!

Remember, he had three rides because of various technicalities. So those two crashes would have happened within about 15 or 20 minutes of each other.

I rarely use a tripod. I have one, but it's inconvenient to lug around. However, I'm going to be getting into some attempts at time lapse photography in the early morning, a little before daybreak, to see what might happen and that will definitely require a tripod.

Holy catz! That dusty ride shot is incredible!

And that poor guy, always ending up face down somewhere. You think by now he'd have learned and taken up some other hobby...like knitting or crochet!

Great shots, Rick!
