Poodle questions
Does anyone else have Poodles? I'm wondering a few things about the breed. I've looked up everything on the internet about poodles, and read every book I can get my hands on, but I can't find this information.
Is it common for Poodles to have underbites? Are Minature Poodles in the small or medium dog size group? Where do Poodles stand in the "smartness" category? Are Poodles generaly a "pack" dog? Is it usual for Poodles to "french kiss" you every chance they get? Thanks for any information. |

I'm no expert on poodles, but:
Any dog can have an underbite. Don't know about it being more common in poodles... Miniature poodles are definitely "small". They can also live a very long time! Poodles are extremely intelligent and easy to train. Generally speaking, most dogs are "pack dogs" as dogs are very sociable animals. That does not guarantee that every dog will like every other dog though! About the french kissing..ewww! |

If I am not mistaken, miniature poodles are smaller then standard poodles but toy poodles are the smallest.
My mom has a standard poodle which she claims is very smart. Not being a poodle fan, I just don't see it.

Poodles are very smart. I think their the third smartest breed? Border collies I think are next, but I'm not sure if any of this is true. I've also heard that mini Poodles are "medium" breeds. They don't fall into the toy category, their into the non-sporting breeds. Hmmm, I was just looking at this site here:
Breed Profiles It says that Pit bulls are rare breeds. Is this true? Almost every dog on the Toronto Humane Society's page is a Pit Bull. How can they be rare if there is so many unwanted ones out there? |

Anyone can get a pit bull of any size, colour, sex or age (even tiny puppies) at anytime, and just about anywhere. When I was looking for a pit bull, I was so overwhelmed at the choice I had, it took me quite awhile to decide on one. |

spoiled. When you hear rare breed, that's not saying that they are rare and hard to find.
There are 7 groups that dogs are classified under. So alot of the times these dogs(rare) are not classified under them.So they have them under the rare breed. Example: Border Collie=herding Retrievers=sporting Bulldog=non-sporting Bloodhounds=hound Siberian Husky=working West Highland=terrier Toy Poodle=toys Dogs in these groups were raised and trained for certain jobs... There are also dogs no recognized in the kennel clubs. So when you have a mixed breed.Say a Rottie and lab.You are getting a working dog and a sporting dog all in one. Here is a link that may help you. http://www.dogs-in-canada.com/featur.../browsebr.html Rare breeds just more or less mean that they are not recognized under the 7 groups.

But there is a non-sporting group to. This group classifys Standard and Minurature Poodles, Sharpies, Dalmatians, and the rest that don't have a "proper" group. Of course, there is some question about it, because Dalmatians could be a working breed. Others could be like this to. I'd say the "rare" breeds should be the ones that are actually rare.

I don't think that pit bulls are really a rare breed. I think this is misinformation. I think that rare breed means what it sounds like and has nothing to do with what group the breed falls into.
When I was looking up info on my Bluetick I found that the breed was considered rare probably because it is only recognized by UKC not the CKC or AKC. In canada, I could not find a book on this breed at the bookstore or library. Here is a link that lists some rare breeds. Pitbull is not on the list. http://www.rarebreed.com/breedlist.html

Dee,yes it is.
Look under American Pit Bull. There is no breed such as just Pit Bull. There is the American Pit Bull Terrier,American Staforshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Like I said, there is no such breed as just Pit Bull

Well I guess I was wrong! Wasn't looking in the right place. I learn new things every day here.
Do you think that they mean it is a rare breed because it is rare to have one that is the breed standard? That has really good blood lines or something? It's weird because I didn't notice anything like a lab or common breeds like that, and definitely some of the ones listed fall into groups like hound etc. I'm really curious now. I'd like to get the answer to this one.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many weird named breeds out there. I've never heard about way more than half of them! Maybe these people just haven't updated their websites?

Actually Dee,it doesn't have anything to do with the breed standard or the bloodlines. It more or less has to do with it being an uncommon breed.Something along that line.
Here is a link that tells all the breeds and what group they are under. The other one I gave was just more of an example. Wait till you hear some of these breeds.LOL http://www.dogs-in-canada.com/breeds/aagroups.html

Wow there sure are a lot of different breed names there!
It makes sense that they are all uncommon breeds, which is why they are considered rare, but like mentioned earlier pit bulls just don't appear to be rare as they are so often in shelters, thats why I didn't get why they would be on the list. I guess though that not all the pit-bulls around are truly "american pit-bull terriers" .

Pit Bull has become kind of a catch all phrase for about 4 or 5 different breeds of dogs and most mixes anymore.

all I know is this:
a few years back, I was looking for an apt for rent & the landlord had a standard poodle. she said I couldn't rent the place bc I had a dog... apparently her female dog was totally territorial of her environment. yah, smart.... ok |

The Poodle would attack another dog? I don't think most poodles would behave in that way. Its probably just a weird dog.

My immediate family has the following dogs
1 rottweiler 1 beagle mix 1 yorkie 1 chihuahua 3 greyhounds 1 standard poodle Dog most likely to bite out of this bunch? You guessed it, the poodle. Any dog, not properly trained, cared for and socialized can and will be aggressive.

Sandi,
Does the Standard Poodle have that funky puff cut.Or is it just natural.A freind of mine had a beautiful black one but only had him trimmed. He had the look of the Irish Water Spaniel. Sorry, but I just hate the puff look.

Andy gets a puppy cut. That is pretty much one length over his whole body. I believe his neck and his muzzle are trimmed shorter. I still think he is a waste of living space.

Hmmm, yes, the Poodle does have a high bite rate. And I have found that out for myself. Right now my "angel" is sleeping on the mat. Yesterday and today I've been trying to teach him not to be aggressive over his bone. He sure is a real little angel who growls lots over his bone. Take a look at this:
Big smile He does look like quite the angel! |
