Cant give my cat her pills! grrr!
You have all probably read about Tabitha and her blood in the bladder issues..well since the other day I have been unable to give her the pills! she is brutal!!! but I wanted to ask..I tried last night after working 15 hours.. .to give her the purple pill and it was a 10 minute fight and I gave up because she began to foam at the mouth and her whole face was full of purple dye...it broke my heart! but the foaming was what concerned me!! I am assuming it is the taste of the pill??
I am heading out later on to try the pill dispenser from Petsmart but have to wait til hubby is home with the car! She has this reflex with her jaws and all she does is start chomping when you try to hold her mouth open! she bit me too! ouch! The pill is huge for a cat! Cindy

Oy, I know all to well the joys of a pilling a difficult cat! I can do anything and everything else to my boy except pill him, and it's not like I don't know how. Despite being 1/10th my size, he has this amazing ability to clamp his jaw shut and twist his head around and gouge me with his front claws all at the same time. Even wrapped in a towel with 2 people holding him, it's hit and miss whether the pill gets in or not. The only thing I can suggest, after you try the pill gun (I haven't used one yet, let me know how it goes), is to coat the pill in butter so that it goes down easier and hopefully tastes less icky. Also syringing some tuna juice down her throat to "chase" the pill should help. What about trying Pill Pockets? I think those mostly work if your cat tends to swallow treats whole, and if you say the pill is big then that might be less likely to happen.
Other than that, perhaps you can ask your vet about compounding the meds into something a little more palatable. Here's a funny article that talks about compounding: http://www.cathobbyist.com/articles/PillingACat.html Good luck! I feel your pain .

if you can get the pill in the mouth, squirt water in the mouth with a syringe,it forces them to swallow.

Oh yeah! sure WDawson! been there done that! the hilarious thing is she is only 6lbs...but a nasty one when it comes to this... I had to give her a few srynges of water last night to stop the foaming....and still didnt get the pill down!
Sugarcatmom! I had used the pill pockets the first time with the antibiotics for the unfection but she only took them in those for 2 days and now refuses them..I actually still have the bag ...Do you think the foaming is from the pill? Cindy

Definitely the foaming is from the pill. It's a defense mechanism to try to flush out the taste.

I learned this trick with my stray, since he needed antibiotics and fortunately the pills were tiny. Don't show her the pill. You open her mouth very wide and put it right in, deep. The whole thing has to happen quicky. I caught him spitting it out , so in it goes again !!!

Cant give my cat her pills! grrr!
Pill Pockets do work--try Salmon flavored from PetCo--if you use these I only use half a pill pocket as to make it that much less bulky for my little on to swallow.
Try dipping the pill in laxitone or a treat that your cat likes. You might also purchase empty pill gel caps from a drug store and cutting the pill to fit into the empty gel cap if necessary (they are really cheap) and that way the cat does not get the initial taste when you are putting in their mouth. I also have a tough cat to pill and I put him between my legs with his back to me I hold his mouth and quickly push the pill wrapped in a pill pocket into the side of the mouth, quickly close his jaw and run his throat and blow in his face so he swallows it. I give him a treat right after as to get rid of any nasty taste from the medicine he may have in his mouth. Good Luck |

It's so frustrating pilling a difficult cat - I do it twice a day. My cat has thyroid problems and has to have those darns pills 2 times a day - she's to the point now that when she sees me she hides! Very sad.....
Sometimes I crush the pills in her favorite canned food(I only put a tablespoon of food at a time to make sure she eats it all), and when that stops working, I let her eat a bit of food first, then quickly open her mouth and keep it shut and rub her throat to make sure she swallows it. But even then, sometimes she shakes her head after and out it comes! There's some good advice on pilling a cat here: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/pilling_a_cat.html |

I'm actually pretty good at giving pills to even the most difficult cats, but it takes practice. My vet is the one that showed me how to get the cat in an effective head/body lock to do it and I can get their mouth open and the pill into the back of the throat with ease now....like I said, took a lot of practice and getting bit and scratched up during the learning process. Main thing is, you need to do it with confidence, if you're apprehensive to start with, the cat is going to get the better of you.

Some cats are just much more difficult to pill than others, no matter what your technique or how much confidence you have going into the process. Even my vet admits she has a cat that is virtually unpillable. She jokes that if he ever needed daily pills, she'd have to implant a feeding tube to get the meds in him.

Well I have been to a couple of pet stores and no one sells the pill dispenser thingy! So last night Tabitha and I had another battle of wits..This time I wrapped her in a towel and it helped a bit....She foamed alot last night and I did give her lots of water to help get the pill down..but because I cut the one pill in half I had to give her 3 pieces to swallow!
 I am going to go out again today to see if I can find it! Cindy
