Pet Supply Stores in Toronto Area
I've recently been made aware (still researching) that Super Pet and PJ's Pet Centre are owned by the same umbrella corp. This concerns me, as for years we have been boycotting PJs due to their horrible husbandry and contribution to the pet over population problem. Thinking that by going to Super Pet we were making a small difference, I now realise that we have been wrong and that our money has been going into the same coffers as those that fund PJs. Tragic.
Does anyone advocate a particular pet supply store that actually contributes to animal welfare? Looking for a store brand that doesn't sell dogs and cats and keeps any animals they do sell in good, above average conditions. Does such a beast exist? What about Pet Smart or Petcetera? The pet supply store has to be herp friendly, providing substrate and care items for reptiles. Not too much to ask is it? heh Dee |

I shop at Pet Planet, but I don't know if there are any in Ont. I only go to Petland or Petsmart for crickets or stuff for my frogs, which is really only crickets. If you want to go to a chain pet store, I would recommend Petsmart. They're pretty good out here. They sell animals, but only fish, and maybe some reptiles occasionally. They are better than Petland for sure and I hate that the Petcetera here doen't have ANY windows!! How creepy!!!

You should definitely check out Global & Ryan's Pet Foods. They have several stores in the GTA. They specialize in healthy foods for pets and I highly recommend them. They have a store in Keswick too!!!

Ya i've been to that one. Bought Toby's leash and collar there. However, it doesn't carry Nature's Miracle and I use it....alot. Also, they don't carry any reptile stuff that we need. We need frozen feeder rats and mice, crickets, sphagnum moss etc. etc. Its not specialty but generally only common in the big chain stores. There's a private store called Wet Thumb in Keswick that caters to reptiles but their husbandry is horrid. Hamsters of all genders together and in too small cages, dirty reptile cages and fish tanks. We went in there once and won't shop there. Perhaps we're being too picky to be realistic but its important to us so were trying to look around.
Ultimately, our guys have to eat but if we have a choice, i'd rather make an informed one. Thanks for the input on Global's, even though it may seem like i'm peeing on it . Worse comes, I know that for general dog stuff I can go there with a clear conscience. What I would give for a broad, all purpose pet store that doesn't morally suck. Hello market niche! Anyone of a business mind? Dee |

I go to Ren's Pet Depot...it's in Oakville, just off the 407, go south on Trafalgar, say one block and you are there. The only pet's in the store are the one's that live there, mostly a cat or two. It's very large and has everything one would need for any type of pet.

There's a nice independent pet store at Parliament street and north of Gerrard south of Wellesley in Toronto. I believe its called Cabbagetown Pet Store. But I'm probably wrong on that. Its quite a good store and has been around for a long time. They have various reptiles walking around freely in the store.

Yes,thumbs up for www.renspets.com I've been going there for many years, wonderful helpful people wonderful store. They are just now getting into the catalogue business. But it is in Oakville,Trafalgar/Burnhamthorpe Rd.
They always have 2 live-in cats, not for adoption and they get them from Humane Society. I actually got Rocky from one of the girls working there about 8yrs ago.

Was reading a York Region message board and someone mentioned it.
http://info.metroland.com/php/phpbb2...opic.php?t=490 Also, when Adam was at SuperPet the other day buying frozen rats, the bag they came in said PJ's on it. Haven't found any more info then that yet but i'm still looking. Still, I feel i've found enough for me personally to justify avoiding them both. Everyone else will need to make their own decisions based on how they feel. Dee |

The petsmart in Ottawa I feel is a good one. they help the ottawa humane society adopt out cats, no kittens puppies etc. and every time i have been there the small animal cages are clean or being cleaned. they also host a wide variety of fundraisers for the ottawa humane society. I have seen differnt groupsie guide dogs and a few rescue group at the store giving out information.
I want to believe that this is the kind of pet store that I will support |
