Keep Kitty from darting out the door!
I live in an apartment building and every time I go to open my door, my kitten darts outside! I hate putting him in my bedroom every time I need to leave but I can't seem to keep him in the apartment! Any suggestions on techniques for keeping him away from the door?

You could try having a spray bottle with water at the door. Every time he heads towards it give him a quick spray. Or try that new product that is supposed to keep them off cupboards. I think it's called PSSSTT. Not sure. It is motioned activated and goes off when kitty comes near. You could also try a quick, sharp NO and turn him gently back around. It will probably take some time and patience before he realizes he is in the best place he can be. Safe inside your home.

I know a lot of people don't like it, but I used the water bottle...and after just having to spray a couple times, all I have to do now is make the 'spray bottle' noise 'tch' and they stop whatever they are doing. Works great.

He may want out even more, if he has a taste of the great outdoors. I wouldn't do it.

I stand there with my leg in the door jam, looking down at whomever until they look up and I point and say GO...has worked on several kittehs...some take longer to learn than others, but they learn.
One thing to keep in mind is to be VERY careful when you open the door...do it slowly with all eyes on furbabies until they learn...they can be quick AND invisible!

Thanks!
Thanks for the great tips! He's already scared of the water bottle so I think I will use that - a co-worker also suggested tying one to the inside door knob so its close at hand if I do need it plus provides Soda (my kitty) with a visual reminder of what he could face if he goes near the door. I will let you all know how THAT works out!
Until then - attached is a pic of the escapee! |

Oh he is adorable!!
You could also try putting a few pennies in a pop can and shaking it when he gets close to the door. My cats hate the noise

What a cutie.
And, he does look a tad mischieveous. Good luck with the water bottle. |

Cute Foot in the door works for me both out the door and don't forget when you are going inside too.

Soda is a cutie!
I have a bamboo screen a friend gave me several years ago. I'm able to position it so that it totally creates a little entry way for me. I can get in with plenty of room and not worry about them getting out. This is how it worked in my last apartment: This is how I've got it where I am now: It works really well for me.
