Valentine's Day Survey Results: Pets vs lovers
Surprising number of pet owners will spend more on their pooch than their smooch this Valentine's Day, according to Lavalife poll
Almost 900,000 Canadians will buy a gift for their pet on hearts day TORONTO, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - Being in the "dog house" could be a good thing this Valentine's Day. According to Lavalife's(TM) Valentine's Day Poll, 9.0 per cent of "attached" Canadians (married or common law) are planning to buy a Valentine's Day gift for their pet this year, and of those, 10.0 per cent (88,955) revealed that they will spend more on their pet than their significant other. Lavalife, the world's largest independent provider of interactive dating services for singles, found that more than half (58%) of those planning to buy a gift for "Rover", "Fluffy" or "Tweetie" will spend between five and 10 bucks, while one out of five (21%) pet owners will pony up between $11 and $25. Pets may be the envy of many because when it comes to being acknowledged on Valentine's Day both single and attached Canadians share the desire to feel connected. When asked if they would appreciate a token Valentine's Day gift or card from anyone they know, 82.0 per cent of singles said yes, compared to 74.0 per cent of attached Canadians. However, spreading happiness among singles on the day of hearts is more likely to come from other singles. When asked if they would buy a Valentine's Day gift or card for a single friend, 50.0 per cent of singles said yes, compared to 26.0 per cent of attached Canadians. "The poll results are telling about human nature and the desire to belong. Valentine's Day is not limited to romance and couples. It's about connecting and reaching out to those you care about, regardless of the nature of that relationship. Gift or card giving is a symbolic gesture that says you 'click' with another in a relationship that may or may not be romantic," said Peter Housley, CEO, Lavalife. Housley added: "Contrary to what many may think, not all singles shy away from the coveted day. In fact, 'singles' are taking control of their own destiny by engaging in some form of activity. The poll reveals that many Canadians, whether single or attached, will commemorate Valentine's Day. This year, more than four out of ten (43%) attached Canadians plan on celebrating romance by going out for dinner, where they'll run into 26 per cent of singles, who will also toast the day by dining out." Further poll findings suggest social interaction will be important to many singles on Valentine's Day. For example, 17.0 per cent of singles plan on getting together with friends, and 7.0 per cent will go the movies. Eleven per cent will have a romantic dinner at home, while 9.0 per cent will do something else. Only 3.0 per cent of singles will curl up with a box of tissues and eat bonbons like there is no tomorrow, as will almost the same number of couples (2%). Lavalife salutes the 95 million singles in North America, and recommends that the 55.0 per cent of singles who plan on carrying out the day with a 'life as usual' attitude take charge of their destiny and take back the day. For fun and innovative ideas on how to take back the day, Lavalife encourages singles to visit lavalife.com or call 1-866-242-LAVA. Also noteworthy, the history of Valentine's Day is lost on 77.0 per cent of Canadians, who responded that they were not 100 per cent sure of the origin of Valentine's Day. There are many legends, but according to one popular story Valentine was a priest who during third century Rome helped defy the decree of Emperor Claudius II (outlawing marriage because single men made better soldiers), by continuing to perform marriages. Accordingly, when the Emperor found out, he ordered Valentine to be executed, making him a martyr and eventually Saint Valentine. About the Lavalife Valentine's Day Poll Ipsos Reid polled 1,000 Canadians over the age of 18 between January 11 and January 20, 2002. The degree of accuracy is considered plus/minus 3.1%, 95 per cent of the time.
