Does anyone know how to compress pictures?

I would love to put more pics on the sight, but they are all to big. How do I compress them?

What type of graphic file does your camera take? Our new digital camera takes a really huge picture (24" x 37") in "jpg" (or other) format. Our old one took shots in "tif". My scanner scans in "tif" also. I use PhotoShop to reduce the size and save as a "jpg".
