I guess it would depend on size of dog, strength of jaws and whether you're talking about raw or other (cooked, smoked etc.) I personally only give the really large smoked marrow bones to my dogs (shank bones from cattle), anything smaller and I'd worry for their safety (small pieces and splinters). I've tried the shanks with knuckles on the ends, or just the large knuckles but mine will tear those apart and get smaller pieces off the knuckles.

Our guys get, and absolutely love raw beef ribs. We feed the long ones, approx. 8-10" with about 1-1 1/2 lbs of meat on them. I don't let them consume the whole bone though and will remove it within an hour or so.

Howdy and Happy New Year
Please don't ever remove bones from meats. Just make sure they are fresh, and they are raw. Ox tails and beef ribs are excellent sources of calcium for your canine. Also, keep these nutritious, soft bones as part of the diet help ensure healthy, healthy gums and teeth as well. A raw regime is about raw, meaty bone, not just meat. In order to achieve quality nutrition, bones should always be considered an integral part of the diet. Let your dog work at chewing and consuming them... it's a path to good canine health.

Thanks for the info, y'all. Although my pack and I are loving the new raw diet, I still find myself a tinge paranoid about the "bigger" bones (heh. Old habits die hard). It's interesting to me, though, how the dogs manage them differently. Gracie crunches through the beef ribs like they're candy, Jaida takes forever to gnaw even half of one, and Heidi...well, actually I took one away from her so I'm not really sure how she'd do with them. They're getting ribs again tomorrow, so I'll just let them do their thing. Boy oh boy do my girls ever love their beef ribs!!!
