The meal form is the best as it has all the water removed from it so therefore you are getting more meat protein in the kibble.
I have never heard anything bad about chicken fat. |

Good for you....by all means go for it. It is a good kibble and you can just use it to mix in with what you're feeding now if you don't want to switch. When they first came out with the original grain-free I got a free large bag of that from them. I decided that I liked Orijen better so just mixed in the Go Natural with it to make the bag last longer.

Hi there.
WDawson may I suggest contacting Michele @ Petcurean customer service and ask about the protein content and chicken vs chicken meal. She can fill you in. Thanks |

I feed Sweet Pea Go Natural (grain free flavours), canned cat food as a change from Wellness canned. I give Jasper and Sweet Pea, the Now cat treats as they are the only treats that Jasper can eat (can't have any grains). Sweet Pea loves the canned and the treats and Jasper loves the treats. No problems with those two products.

I am going to e-mail Petcurean and ask them about the protein thing. I think from what I heard, that chicken fat is also rendered, same as the meal, so this food is render free.
When I get an answer I will post it (or if someone gets it before me they can post it) |

Fresh meat versus meal as a protein source on label
The reply!
Fresh meat in pet food are more similar to raw based on how protein is determined on label. Here is an example of what I am speaking of. In determining protein content on label this is how it is done: If a food has 50% meat inclusion it could look like this 25% meat X 16% protein = 4% crude protein on label 25% meal X 63% protein = 15.75% crude protein on label This would then equal 19.75% crude protein on label There are many variations on this depending on whether more meal or more meat is used. Even if a person used only 100% chicken meat in the diet, because the value of that particular protein is only 16-18% this is the amount of protein you would be getting, on label in the guaranteed analysis. As well, chicken meal ALWAYS contains bone, and that is not a usable protein source for the dog. The level of bone can vary, depending on what is purchased (we purchase the low ash for our "meal" foods) , higher bone equals less overall meat, so in some cases chicken meal DOES NOT have more meat. As well, this then contributes to the amount of calcium, phosphorus and ash on label. As well, in terms of the amount of protein a dog gets in grams per day on a raw diet, in the typical grain frees they are over double. Food for thought I guess, have to get out the calculator again! |
