Need to know what to expect
My dog Peanut about 10 days ago was getting her belly rubs and she yelped. I checked out why and found a lump. I took her to the vet the next day and she did a needle biopsy and did not like what she saw so we scheduled her for surgery and it was done. The patholgy showed it to be a malignant tumor and very agressive. The vet followed up with an xray and found a tumor in her lungs. The vet says this type of tumor does not respond well to treatment ie chemo ect so it is just a waiting game now, but the vet thinks sooner then later. I am 48 yrs old and have never lost a dog to anything but old age so not quite certain what to look for and when to make the decision. Maybe I am just looking for sympathy I don't know. I just know my and my wife's hearts are breaking. We have had her since she was a puppy rescued from the APA (Animal Protective Association) and she is now 8 + years old.

I'm so sorry your family is going through this. It's so hard when a beloved pet is sick, and with a terminal illness the "not knowing" stuff is so very hard. Many people will tell you that when the time comes, you'll know-Peanut will make it clear that it's time when she no longer enjoys her favourite things or people enough to keep the sparkle in her eyes. Then it will be the kindest thing you can do for her, to say goodbye. It won't be easy; I watched my partner struggle for months over the inevitability of that "goodbye" with her Golden, Shaya, who was dying of kidney failure. There will be really bad days followed by really good days, which makes it all the harder. Just enjoy Peanut as much as you can for now, and live for each day (that's what dogs do best). Love her, spoil her rotten, let her eat whatever she wants, and manage any pain as best you can until the time comes. Just cherish each and every moment.

I guess I know, but just don't want her to be in pain.

Of course you don't, so watch for the obvious: panting, crying, restlessness, inappetance etc. Talk to your vet. They can help you guage how she's feeling if you're not sure. Is she on any pain medication now?

As tired as the saying is - you will know when it is time to let go. It will be hard but it will also be the kindest thing you can ever do for your precious Peanut. I have gone through this more times than I care to think of and it never gets easier. Just know you are doing the right thing. No one wants to see their pet in pain.
Until that time just love her. That's all she wants.

the vet gave us some pain medication and we are watching her and trying to not just give it to her, but when we feel she needs it. I don't want to just dope her up and have her spend all her time in her crate.

I am so sorry  I have lost 3 dogs to cancer. All I can say is , enjoy her , spend time with her , spoil her rotten , tell her how much you love her.
and come here whenever you have questions , if you're not sure about something , and if you only need to talk , we will be here |
