Not a bad movie, but if you can find it, watch the Japanese original (1980's) - so much more realistic....
And yeah, we all .....

a beautiful story

(but I always worry about glamorized Hollywood movies with dog stars, especial with a breed like Akita's (an amazing breed but ya gotta know a bit about them and training and the importance of socialization, etc.) just that it doesn't result in a boom in Akita BYB or millers)

I purchased Hachi the day it came out. I love it, and I lent it to a friend (former Akita breeder). It's a lovely movie.

I don't think it will inspire a BYB Akita movement like other films (Marley and Me, and of course the disastrous - 101 Dalmatians), only because of the extreme rarity of the Japanese Akita in North America (the more typical American Akita looks quite different to the average person).

Interestingly enough, the film comes with a warning at the end (ie. this Akita is not typical).

I did have a person approach me recently asking about my Japanese Akita puppy (he is a full-grown Shiba Inu, so he looks similar but is certainly not the same), and talk about how amazing it was that the Akita always comes back He seemed a bit mentally-challenged so I didn't try too hard to explain how different the movie Hachi was from a typical Akita, but I suppose people will believe anything without research.

Lovely story for dog owners - it reminds you how important each day with your furbaby is, because it can end instantly. I think my husband and I were choking at the end it was so sad
