Necessary Immunizations
Hi, I'm new here. Don't really know what I'm doing, but I do have a question. My groomer said that in addition to Rabies and Parvo/distemper shots, my dogs also need a Bordetella shot. What is this for and why is it needed? And...is it absolutely necessary?

Bordetella is a vaccine for kennel cough. The vaccine will provide some immunity but since kennel cough is caused be a variety of viruses not 100%.I have a kennel and require all dogs to be vaccinated, since although kennel cough is not really serious,it can last for a few weeks and dogs in a higher stress situation or who are in multiple dog facility are more prone to develop it.The viruses are airborne so do not require direct contact for transmission. If your dog only has occasional outdoor contact with other dogs,I wouldn't bother. If your groomer requires it and you really like this groomer your decision is already made.hope this helps
