Blood clotting is definitely a concern when a patient presents with thrombocytopenia. With that said, the prednisone and azathioprine that Sway is on right now can cause a temporary elevation in platelet count. Also an underactive spleen can cause it, which sounds like Sway might have right now.
Have the doctors ruled out some type of lymphoma which is normally not seen on an ultrasound. Did your vet mention lymphoma at all?

As to herbal and homeopathic medication. I always get frustrated when talking to customers about these two topics. Just because someone says it is natural or you can buy it over-the-counter does not mean it is not harmful. A prime example of this is Ma Huang, aka ephedra. This is a herbal/chinese product that has caused countless amounts of deaths and is now banned in most countries throughout the world. I always recommend that before you put yourself or your pet on any natural product that you investigate each ingredient carefully. Do you know what was in your holistic vets chinese preparation for Sway? Also most prescription products that many people think are evil and bad are actually from a natureal source, eg is digoxin from foxglove or penicillin is from mold.
