giardia question

My 7 mo old Pom puppy has been diagnosed with giardia and is on a 5 day regime of Panacur. There are other dogs in the house, who show no signs of giardia but are being treated anyway as preventative. I've scrubbed everything in the house (carpet, bedding, dog dishes, toys etc.), I'm bathing the puppy every day, and he is being kept separate from everyone until he tests "clean".

We live on an acre of land and my question is "is there anything I can spray on the grass of our acre to kill off the the giardia out there"? I have no idea how to keep the puppy from re-infecting himself when he goes outside to potty on the grass. And of course I worry about the other dogs getting it too.
Thank you for you help.

As far as I know, there's no way to eliminate it from the environment around your house unless you can find a way to keep wildlife out of your yard. I know that dogs commonly pick it up by drinking tainted water, so if you have standing water in your yard that you can get rid of, you'd be that much ahead of the game.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd like to hear them, too!

Good luck with your pom puppy. The good news is that dogs seem to get a little more resistant to giardia as they get older. I hope the same is true for your little guy.

Thank you so much for responding to my question hazelrunpack. I'm hoping some other folks will also respond with suggestions as well.

Bleach will kill the giardia in the grass, of course it will also kill your grass

Add 1 cup household bleach to 1 gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to get better/even coverage. Of course with an acre you may just want to not allow access to the yard for a couple of months . Using bleach means it might be as long as a year before something will grow there.

Do not allow the dogs out in the area that has been sprayed until it is fully dry to avoid them getting bleach on their feet.

Giardia forms cysts and can survive freezing temperatures. Sunlight and lack of moisture will eventually kill most of the spores over time.

To increase the efficacy of disinfectants, solutions should be left for 5-20 min before being rinsed off kennel or run surfaces. Disinfection of grass yards or runs is impossible. These areas should be considered contaminated for at least a month after infected dogs last had access. Cysts are susceptible to desiccation, and areas should be allowed to dry thoroughly after cleaning. Cysts contaminating the hair of dogs and cats may be a source of reinfection. Shampooing and rinsing the animals well can help remove cysts from hair.
