Shiba's

My male shiba has a very thick double coat at this time of year.
But my females coat is not nearly as thick, I have not noticed this happen in past years.
I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this with there dogs.

Grown back in from a major shed, or grown back in the same from being cut down?

My Samoyed's coat will come in a lot thinner if the weather is too warm. Even in winter... if it's not -40... her coat can be half of what it should be. The fact that she's older and spends most of her life indoors also affects that. Is the weather where you are warmer? I cna't really use my Shiba as a comparison since she's just a year old. She was fat and fluffy this time last year!

Where in Alberta are you Normag? I'm in Leduc. Shiba's are cute... but she's got quite the attitude compared to my old girl. Maybe my Samoyed's just too old for me to remember if she was this bratty.

Here's some pictures of my Suki. She's eight years old. Suki a typical Shiba; she screams, can be stubborn, but I wouldn't trade her in for the world! She's VERY affectionate, and Hamish and her (the Scottie) are inseperable.

Hi to Everyone. Normag, I have seen some changes in my female Shiba's coat this year, too, and joined the forum tonight to see if I can find some help. This last sping and again this fall when she should be shedding coat and/or adding coat, she has been scratching her coat out on her sides and belly. It lasted about 2 months in the spring. It's like as the coat is growing in, it is driving her crazy with itching. I changed her food in the spring as the only thing I came up with was a food allergy. This fall I am seeing some flaky skin in her coat, but not where she is scratching. Does anyone have any ideas? I have treated for hotspots, flea allergies (though she doesn't have any), added oil to her food, tried herbal and oatmeal baths... I'm at a loss and want to help her. Any help is appreciated.

Every late summer, my Suki goes through the similar problem. She would itch, itch, itch, lick, lick, lick. My vet said she has seasonal allergies and gave me a list of antihistamines that could help her. Benadryl was one, but I didn't like how drowsy it made her. I have found Loratadine (brand name Claritin) works really well for her.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I have given my dog Benadryl before, during severe thunderstorms, but not for this. I will give it (or Claritin) a try. I appreciate your message.

I can't with shiba's but in eskies the males do have thicker fuller coats than the females, check out the breed standards it may indicate there if the same is true with shiba's

I've never saw a Shiba Inu before. They are beautiful dogs. They look similar to a husky.
